Topic: Two new names, please

Hello Chris.

Cleaning up some unresolved records, I have come across these - would you add them to UKSI, please?

Zele albiditarsus http://eol.org/pages/3770682/names/synonyms

and

Technomyrmex albipes http://eol.org/pages/471596/names

Re: Two new names, please

Hi Murdo - those are already in:

Zele albiditarsus Curtis 1832
exists - tvk NHMSYS0020972464

Technomyrmex albipes (Smith, 1861)
exists - tvk NHMSYS0020973196

They probably just haven't made it to your version yet :)

Re: Two new names, please

Thanks Chris.

There is something very odd, though (what a surprise!).  Technomyrmex does not show on the Gateway on https://data.nbn.org.uk/Taxa.  Z. alb. does the same as the Cotula alpina I alerted a few weeks ago - it does not appear in the returns for 'Zele', but if I expand the genus I see it.

In the past few weeks in our wonderful new Gateway, and purely in the course of ordinary use (i.e. I am not searching for problems), I have alerted to errors in Cotula, Botria, Zele and Technomyrmex (though I suppose in that last instance it may not have reached the Gateway system yet).  That suggests to me that there are *very many* other similar problems yet to be uncovered, as I would have as good a chance of winning the lottery without a ticket as of picking up all the faults in the course of four routine searches.

You will have the understanding of how these errors might relate to the database structure and who is responsible for implementing UKSI correctly on the Gateway, so may I ask you to pass it on to the right desk, please? And we will hope it does not sink to the bottom of the enormous heap of faults that have already been notified through the Forum.  The taxon search is, after all, fundamental to the raison d' etre of the site.

Gateway 5 makes me wish I had taken up knitting instead of natural history (and I am not the only one who thinks similarly).  Unfortunately, it's too early for a large glass of malt ...

And of course, as with Botria, both Technomyrmex and Zele alb. are showing perfectly on the old Gateway.

Re: Two new names, please

A little more exploration has added a bit more light on this, Chris.  Botria shows up if you expand Tachninidae in the Taxa page.  Similarly Technomyrmex in Formicidae.  They have no other congeners in old (?) lists, hence, unlike Cotula and Zele which do have congeners, trying to call up the genus fails to return anything.

So they are all in there, and the problem seems likely to be a single phenomenon, but there has clearly been major glitch in migrating lists or hierarchies from G4 to G5.

Re: Two new names, please

Hi Murdo - I will have words with Graham and see if we can track the issues down. I know the new Gateway have had some teething problems because they have been redeveloping most of the tools and not reusing the older technologies. As an ex software developer myself I know how tricky this kind of thing can be but I think the end product will be worth waiting for ... and possibly even a few extra grey hairs for us all ;)

Re: Two new names, please

Hello Murdo

I have updated the underlying table used within the Browse species pages on the NBN Gateway. The searches should now find all names in the species dictionary currently on the NBN Gateway, including the missing names mentioned above.

Best wishes
Graham
