Topic: No more Comments

Ok, I that my import problems are a symptom of a different problem, relating to Taxon_Occurence_Ccomment.
The bird data that I was trying to import was throwing up the exception when trying to add taxon_determinations to taxon_occurrences that had been rejected without any warnings being triggered. So when examining the resulting import, some records were present in their entirety, some with just survey_event and Sample present. These missing Taxon_occurences being the ones with comments.

This also tallies with the original issue I had with the original NBN Zipped Access database - it was the comments that were breaking the system then too.

I have subsequently tried entering a single record using the 'Enter Single Record' form, and a  record is successfully created, but the comment is lost. It is also not possible to add comments to existing Taxon_Occurrences. The cursor appears in the box when you attempt it, but nothing happens when you type anything. This does not happen with Sample Comments, so there is something inherently wrong with the Taxon_Occurence table.

It is possible to add a row into the table directly in SQL Server, with a comment.

So with hindsight, I'm not sure that the upgrade to SQL SErver 2008 has made any difference to the problem I was suffering from, and now I'm stuck without being able to enter any new data into Recorder for fear of losing valuable comments.

Re: No more Comments

The comments seem to have re-appeared. I guess re-starting SQL Server may have had some impact. Creating records with comments seems to be possible again.

However the import of the excel file with 1559 rows in it fails when it gets to the stage of importing the taxon_determinations. When opening up the survey in Recorder, all the Survey_events and Samples are visible, but the taxon_occurrences are not. Examining the database behind recorder seems to indicate that the taxon_occurrecnes have been imported, but that they simple cannot be accessed - indeed using the 'Go To Key' add-in with a Taxon_occurrence_key taken from the database gives an error "Error Showing "LC0002150000ON2N". Error: GetItem:List index out of bounds (%d).

So is this a SQL Server file size issue? The instance is build version 10.0.5500, and it is the Express edition of SQL Server 2008.

Re: No more Comments

From what I can tell, the filesize limitation for SQL server 2008 was removed, in R2. The hard drive that the database is installed on is NTFS, not FAT32, so that shouldn't be causing the file size problem either. Nevertheless, that is apparently what is happening:
Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.TAXON_DETERMINATION'.'IX_TAXON_OCCURRENCE_KEY' in database 'NBNData' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup.

Any thoughts anyone?

Re: No more Comments

This page: http://support.powerdnn.com/KB/a132/err … -your.aspx refers to an artificial size limitation - assuming you upgraded to 2008 R2, perhaps a 4gb size limitation is hang over from the database being in 2005?

Dave,

I think you're suffering from the same problem we've had see http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=4530

Re: No more Comments

Does performing "=TRIM(CLEAN(RC))" on the comment as used by Les Hill – see http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=16871#p16871 – solve the problem for imports via the import wizard?

When entering data by other means are you cutting and pasting comments (in which case they may still contain problem characters) or are you keying them in? Any help with identifying the problem characters would be much appreciated. We have made Recorder 6 cope with some, but obviously not all.

Re: No more Comments

No. Importing this spreadsheet throws the exception at the Taxon_Determination stage - so no Taxon_occurences are now viewable in Recorder. Looking in the database, all the comments appear to have been imported correctly (for what it's worth!).

Re: No more Comments

It appears that it was not SQL Server 2008 R2 that I had upgraded to. I have done so now and the problem has been solved. For the records, the build number for this version of SQL Server is 10.50.4000.

Re: No more Comments

We're having a problem with Taxon Occurrence Comments too!

If we enter Comments for single species records, they save but then don't show up as Taxon Occurrence Comments. They don't always allow entry later on, either (i.e. from the Survey hierarchy window). Whilst we don't use this entry format very often (mostly using lists rather than single records) this is a nuisance, esp. for species such as amphibians with lots of notes.

Another problem: the "Checked" box on the Survey hierarchy window for these individual records doesn't show as checked even when the entry has been ticked in the adjacent list.

There does appear to be a problem with this mode of record entry, which as far as I can tell dates from the most recent upgrade (v6.18). We're on SQL Server 2008; unlike the OP we haven't made any recent changes to it though.

Neither problem seems to be linked to either user status or which other windows are open.

Re: No more Comments

The problem you are having looks more like the one reported at

http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=16940#p16940

Does it correct itself after you have exited the hierrachy and gone back in ?

Re: No more Comments

Hi Mike,
Just tried a few versions of this.
Short answer: yes, but only under certain circumstances.

So, the Comments entry has been saved, apparently, but it doesn't show up until you exit the Survey hierarchy, open it again using the main menu Observations button, and expand to the taxon occurrences using the contents listing on the left, not the "related occurrences" or whatever on the bottom right of the popup (the latter action seems to crash the window each time, even for very short lists, incidentally).

Not urgent, just a minor glitch that's had our volunteers getting frustrated as they haven't been able to tell whether things have saved or not. Hopefully this doesn't apply to any other elements in the single record entry process.
