Topic: List of additional names

Whilst compiling a summary species list for a site (i.e. listing each taxon only once), I noticed that there were two identical entries for Wild Teasel, Dipsacus fullonum.

On further investigation I discovered that while most of the records were recorded against the vascular plants preferred list and some against the Recorder 3.3 list (where the taxon names are synonymous), there was at least one record against an item in the list of additional names. In this list although both common and scientific names are identical with those in the other lists, the item appears with the SppAgg icon.

I am aware that in the past Wild Teazel (now D. fullonum) and Fuller's Teazel (D. sativus) were formerly regarded as subspecies of fullonum and I assume this was the intent of the aggregation. However, if this is the case, then the scientific name should be recorded as D. fullonum agg., or better D. fullonum s.l.

Whatever the case, it makes no sense for two taxa to exist with indistinguishable recommended scientific names, which also share the same incorrect common name. Or more accurately since recorder can distinguish a difference in the intent (since one is marked as SppAgg) it should also make that clear in the names output.

Re: List of additional names

Hi Rob,

I have checked the NameServer here and there are 2 distinct entries - a normal species and one with a "sensu lato" attribute. I think things are OK in terms of the species inventory but perhaps this is a Recorder display problem or an issue that has already been fixed and will filter down to you in the next update. But I am happy to be proven wrong if Mike can find anything out of kilter in the data :)

I am sure you are right Chris. I hope that at some future date the Recorder display/reporting problem will be resolved.

Re: List of additional names

I think I've come across this problem before  (its Recorder at fault?) - see http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=2165

Basically it doesn't show "sensu lato" type thingies in some cases.

Note Mikes comment about picking up the "attribute" in XML reports.
