Re: dictionary upgrades

HI,

have just tried to run the new dictionary upgrade, and apparently I haven't done upgrade D.  So, I downloaded that one as well as the new one, and tried to re-run the upgrade.  I then get an error message saying that script file 000000D is missing.  On checking what was in the download from recorder software dictionary upgrades corner, I note that the zip folder for D is purely an MSaccess file of around 14Mb, but no sql file.

So, where should I look for that file?

Re: dictionary upgrades

D is actually a zip file and is just mis-labelled as a .sql file on the website. You need to have it installed in the scripts folder without unzipping it first.

Re: dictionary upgrades

Hi

I had to do the Dictionary upgrade and found that the file 000000D was not in the scripts folder so downloaded it. I have the 000000E file there too, but still with the .sql at the end. Does that have to be changed to .zip before running the upgrade program?

I tried to run the program by double clicking DictionaryUpgrade.exe and the program started to do something then stopped (the program is not responding) and had to be abandoned. I saw no progress indicators. This happens even if I start with doing the 000000D upgrade alone.

I see a small window with 'Please wait, upgrading dictionaries...'

then 'Copying records into TAXON...' and nothing happens.

Any suggestions please?

Cheers, Ian

Re: dictionary upgrades

It's only B and D that are .zip files, C and E are .sql files. You need to dump them into the scripts folder as-is; don't unzip them, rename them or otherwise change them otherwise the upgrade won't work.

It should also be noted that some dictionary upgrades take a VERY long time (several hours), depending on the size of the upgrade file and how many you're doing. The dictionary upgrade tool will look like it has crashed because it sits there during the upgrade with a rather baleful "not responding" message. If it looks like it has stopped working, check the Windows Task Manager Processes or Performance tab to see if your CPU is crunching away. If it is, then it's still working and you should just leave it alone. If your CPU is not apparently doing anything, then it probably has indeed crashed and we'll need to look at it further.

The current behavior of the dictionary upgrade tool - when it says "not responding" - is VERY misleading and confusing to users, so hopefully it'll be one of the things looked at in the next development cycle.

Re: dictionary upgrades

Hi
Sorry - I have relabelled d as a zip file.
I also agree with Charles - we will look at the upgrade tool in the next release.

Re: dictionary upgrades

Thanks - it worked a treat now - unzipping was the pitfall I had fallen into

Re: dictionary upgrades

Hi Charles

Thanks for the reminder. I did have a vague recollection of watching the CPU usage graph rather than reading the messages.... I look forward to that being made more user-friendly.

All the best, Ian

Re: dictionary upgrades

Hi

I am trying to do a dictionary upgrade but keep getting an error message 'Unable to create directory'. Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: dictionary upgrades

I haven't  heard of this before. If you can I  suggest you try running the upgrade as Administrator. Right click on DictioanryUpgrade and choose run as Administrator.   .

Leonie

Can you tell me which upgrade is causing the problem, might be possible to work out what it is trying to do.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your advice earlier. I have successfully completed the updates now.

Thanks

Re: dictionary upgrades

Mike

Interesting that you hadn't come across this error before. For future reference all it was was that Leonie had not unzipped the update and had put the .zip file in the scripts folder rather than its constituent .sql files.

Re: dictionary upgrades

Rob

Many thanks Rob. It isn't  listed as message caused by this problem. I should  have thought of it.  I will add it to the list of errror messages for future reference.

Re: dictionary upgrades

Leonie, were you misled by the Help? The help on upgrading the dictionaries in R6 pre April 2011 says not to unzip the download files but the procedure has changed since that was written because when the new Recorder web-site became available in October 2009 JNCC wouldn’t allow files like 0000000T.sql to be available for download unless they were zipped. Previously they had been available exactly as required in the Scripts folder. The revised help has been updated for this change – see http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=8812#p8812
