Re: Nettle rusts

Hello again Charles.

I have been uneasy for a while about the taxonomic treatment of Puccinia urticata in the dictionary, but in my ignorance of the intricacies of the taxonomy I have delayed reporting my concerns while I tried to get clarity.  I think that has come in the determination and comment at http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/159630.

The operational problems of matching taxa in R6 are too complex to describe here, but in summary there is substantial confusion between urticata and caricina, and indeed the genus itself.

Would you please examine the correct taxonomic system, and check that it is correctly represented in the dictionary?  As I am sure that I am not the only person who will be confused by this, some statement on the synonymy would be helpful whether the dictionary is right now or wrong.

Hi Murdo,

I shall have the mappings that we are using in the Species Dictionary checked out. But I guess you will still need to know the range of names that people might have used in recording their observations, when using the Gateway.

Best wishes,

Re: Nettle rusts

Thanks, Charles.  I first noticed a problem when records of P. urticata were imported to R6 as just Puccinia.

I then thought (wrongly) that P. caricina was a synonym, and entered records as that.

The name Nettle Clustercup which should, I think, be associated with urticata, is linked in the dictionary to P. caricina var. caricina (http://data.nbn.org.uk/gridMap/gridMap.jsp?allDs=1&srchSpKey=NBNSYS0000021848).

I don't know what the problem is, but I am certain there is one somewhere (and I am glad it is not my task to sort it out!).
