Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

Hi everyone :)

Charles Roper has kindly supplied some XML reports that we are going to include in the next release of Recorder 6 - version 6.9.3.

Following this, I wondered if any other Recorder users would be willing to share any XML reports they have created?

I'm guessing that a lot of users such as LRC's will have similar requirements in terms of the reports they need to run, and think that it would be a good idea to pool resources.

Rather than supplying all of these reports in Recorder, I thought that we could provide a place for them on the web- probably on the Recorder Software website, alongside a description of each report and who it was created by. I know that some of you may have already swapped reports or placed some on the uploads page, but I think it would be really useful if we could make them all available at one place.

What are your thoughts?

Is anyone willing to donate any XML reports?

Many thanks,

Sarah

Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

More than happy to supply what I've done.
How do you want it, Sarah: just the refined working versions or the entire batch which includes all the sticking points I've been discussing on this site.
Mike Weideli has the knack of solving some of the knottier XML report problems, I'd feel very reassured if some of his stuff found its way onto the site.

Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

This sounds great. I have uploaded some already, but I was wondering whether it would be sensible to have a 'modertor' type person who could sift out duplicate reports. So if someone has produced an xml report and then someone else makes it better, the old one gets replaced by the new one if it is the same. Otherwise we could end up with the same or similar reports being added, but which do exactly the same thing but are called slightly different names. I could see it getting very confusing when trying to choose an appropriate report.

Any thoughts?

Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

I can't remember if they were ever included, but Mike Weideli's custom report wizard attributes would make excellent additions. They can be downloaded here:

http://www.lfield.co.uk/lcDownloads.html

The only one I wouldn't include is SCRIPTDESIGNATIONBRPARAM.zip which is a nice idea, but not yet ready for prime-time as it's incredibly slow in operation and also a bit fiddly to work with (you have to manually change values in a custom table). The others are all extremely useful additions, though.

Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

Thanks for such a quick and positive response!

Darwyn - any really. Refined, or refined and 'works in progress', though let me know which is which!

My XML skills at the moment are virtually non-existent so I wouldn't be able to contribute towards those that need a little 'tweaking' but someone else here might, or if not we could have a section on 'works in progress' maybe.

I'll email Mike and Sally to see if they have any reports they would be willing to contribute, and also ask Mike about the Report Wizard downloads.

You can provide reports via the uploads page or email me.

As for moderating, I was initially going to gather them all together and go through them (that should identify any duplicates initially), but I would also be willing to go through them every couple of months to remove any that had now been replaced etc.

I think having good descriptions of each report (stating clearly what each report does) should also help avoid confusion.

Thank you everyone,

Sarah

Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

Having emailed Mike Weideli to see if he had any reports he could contribute, he said that most of what he has produced was very user specific and would probably not be suitable for all users.

However, he made the very generous offer of looking into producing some useful generic reports free of charge if there were gaps between what has been created and what is needed.

Once we have gathered a number of reports together, I think it would be a good idea to look at what reports are  available and if they are any potential reports that could be produced and used by all.

Or if anyone has any suggestions in the mean time please let me know.

I think the best thing to do in terms of adding the report wizard downloads of Mike's (as suggested by Charles) would be to provide a link to this page from our potential XML reports page.

Kind regards,

Sarah

Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

I don't think many people are going to install Mike's report wizard scripts unless they're quite technically literate. Unlike the relatively easy XML Reports install process, which simply need to be dropped into a folder, Mike's scripts need to be installed into the database manually. This can only be done by using Access or by installing SQL Server Management Studio Express (or similar) and running the scripts. It's quite a tricky process; one that many people wouldn't even attempt, and thus by not having them in the default Recorder install, these invaluable report wizard attributes are denied to the users that would find them most valuable.

Re: Sharing XML Reports - can you help?

Hi Charles

Mike did say we were free to use these but that he cannot guarantee them etc. (which is understandable).

With that in mind I'll add this to my 'suggested improvements to the program' list as this might be something we could look into adding in the future. However, for the moment we want to concentrate our efforts on improving a few key areas - I'm hoping to publish a preliminary 'phase 2' of the Recorder 6 development plan by the end of the week with more details on this.

Kind regards,

Sarah
