Re: Manila Clam - Ruditapes philippinarum

Charles

The Manila Clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams & Reeve, 1850), also known as the Japanese Carpet Shell, has been found in British waters - "The Japanese carpet shell (Ruditapes philippinarum) is native to Japan with a wide distribution in the Indian and Pacific Oceans from Pakistan to the Russian Federation (Kuril Islands). It has subsequently been introduced along the North American Pacific coast, the Hawaiian Isles and, over the last 20 years, along the European coastline from the United Kingdom to the Mediterranean Basin."

See over at: http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/1002/  -  "The Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was introduced to Poole Harbour (lat 50°N) on the south coast of England in 1988 as a novel species for aquaculture. Contrary to expectations, this species naturalised."

This species has just been added to the MapMate Dictionary (in the latest Update).

This species now needs adding to the Dictionary for NBN, NHM, Recorder and webservices.

Many thanks

Re: Manila Clam - Ruditapes philippinarum

This is already in the Dictionary under Tapes philippinarum on the Ulster Museum Dictionary. Why the name change ? Tapes seems to be the most widely used name.

Re: Manila Clam - Ruditapes philippinarum

I see what you mean David - see here:  http://www.conchsoc.org/encyclopedia/sp … 0000178284

Should Ruditapes philippinarum (A. Adams & Reeve, 1850) go in as a synonym then ??  Along with the English Common names of:

- Manilla Clam
- Japanese Carpet Shell
- Manilla Carpet-shell

Other Scientific/Latin name synonyms for this species include:

- Venerupis philippinarum (A. Adams & Reeve, 1850)
- Tapes philippinarum
- Ruditapes philippinarum
- Venus philippinarum
- Tapes japonica
- Tapes semidecussata
- Paphia bifurcata
- Tapes quadriradiatus
- Tapes violascens

Certainly I feel the Ruditapes philippinarum name needs adding as a synonym (as a minimum) to enable Recorder-6 and other applications based around NBN Webservices to take in data from MapMate users.

Also:  the entry for Tapes decussatus (Linnaeus, 1758)  needs another English/Common name of Cross-cut Carpet-shell adding.

Cheers

Re: Manila Clam - Ruditapes philippinarum

Steve,

I have added Ruditapes philippinarum (A. Adams & Reeve, 1850) and Manila Clam.

Ruditapes philippinarum is the preferred name for Tapes philippinarum according to the European Register of Marine Species and this (as a subset of WORMS) is a standard source for marine nomenclature.

Re: Manila Clam - Ruditapes philippinarum

Thanks Charles.

However, should the English Name (Manilla Carpet-shell) from the Conchological Society of GB&I website also be added ??

In fact shouldn't the English Names from all the species entries on this site be checked and where necessary added to the NBN Dictionary ?
