Re: SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Trying to install Recorder 6 on a new PC running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

Logged in as a Windows user with administrator rights.

Before starting Recorder installation, as that same Windows user I successfully created a (test) database using the same instance as subsequently chosen in Recorder installation. I manually stopped that SQL Server instance immediately before installation. That service is configured to automatically start upon Windows boot/restart.

Appears to connect to my specified existing instance, but after (the installation prompted) restart, in Recorder Database Setup / Database Login Options, with either SQL server 'sa' login or NT account login, get 'Access is Denied' warning, and cannot proceed. I know the password I'm entering is correct (used successfully in SQL Server Management Studio to connect to Database Engine).

The CD I'm using contains Recorder 6.13 (June 2008). Obviously I'd upgrade to the latest version if I could get past the initial hurdle.

Has anyone encountered this problem, please ?

Re: SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Hi John
I'm just trying to install on W7 Home Premium 64 bit myself. I have installed SQL Server R2 Express and can connect to it via Management Studio, but when I run the Recorder install, the SQL Server Settings page has the option to use an existing local SQL Server or MSDE instance greyed out. It only gives me the option to install a new instance of SQL Express. The CD is v6.14.4.

I'm a little confused by your report. Why did you stop the SQL Server instance before installation, and if you stopped it, how did you persuade Recorder to install onto it?

Re: SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

John, Thanks for responding.

Initially I did try to install Recorder whilst the SQL Server instance was running.

In the Recorder Installation Wizard "MSDE Settings" window, after entering the Instance name under "Use an existing local SQL Server or MSDE instance", I got an error " Unable to reach the specified SQL Server/MSDE instance. If you entered the instance name manually, please check it is spelt correctly. The error was as follows: 'An instance of the service is already running' ".

Pressing Ok closed that error window and returned to the "Use an existing local SQL Server or MSDE instance." or "Install a new instance of MSDE onto this machine." radio button choice window.

I didn't choose the latter button because I don't want to use the (old, 32-bit) MSDE product.

I stopped the instance (Management Studio), left the instance name as I'd already typed it, and progressed further with the installation (i.e. beyond where I was prompted to restart the computer).

If your window is entitled "SQL Server Settings" rather than "MSDE Settings", perhaps there are other differences in the installation script.

Is a later setup installation script available for download, that I could use with my Recorder 6 CD ?

Re: SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Your reseller should be able to obtain a newer CD for you, though in my experience the CD does not detect the presence of my installation of SQL Express 2008. Recently the database provided has been switched from MSDE to SQL Express 2005, though in our cases we would like 2008.

Re: SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Forgot to say, if you use the 6.14.4 CD and allow it to create a new instance of SQL Express 2005, then it does work and so far everything seems fine. So Windows 7 64 bit seems to be no problem.
