Topic: Lymnaea peregra/Radix balthica/Radix peregra

Hi Chris

I believe TVK NHMSYS0020528276, Radix peregra (O. F. Müller, 1774), should be a synonym of TVK NHMSYS0001702201, Radix balthica (Linnaeus, 1758). It seems to be the other way round - perhaps due to the MARINE list taking priority?

If it helps, I have a record of Lymnaea peregra and I think it should be coming out as Radix baltica BUT I note all the comments in the facts (which comes from Anderson 2005 checklist) and elsewhere online regarding the taxonomy of this group!

The only explanation of the situation that I can find that is suitable for someone of my level of knowledge of molluscs is from the BRISC newsletter, written by Adrian Sumner:

the common freshwater snail Lymnaea peregra (now known as Radix balthica)

Radix balthica and  Radix peregra are also both present as distinct taxa on the Environment Agency checklist. R. balthica recommended as R. balthica on the MOLLUSC checklist, with R. peregra recommended as R. peregra on the MARINE checklist, but if R. peregra on the MARINE checklist is synonymized then this may solve this?

I'm more into marine molluscs but my understanding is that Radix balthica (L., 1758) is the correct taxon, though I have heard R. peregra (O. F. Müller, 1774) being used. You might want to double check with Adrian Norris, the Conchological Society's non-marine recorder (nonmarine@conchsoc.org).
