Topic: Source for UKSI data

I'm working through the Warehouse installation instructions and cannot find a suitable source for the UKSI access database described there. The NHM site has a page which appears to describe it, but the download is actually the documentation as a PDF. Can anyone suggest an alternative source?

I have also created a trivial PR on github to update the source of the script: https://github.com/SK53/indicia-docs/pull/1

Re: Source for UKSI data

Hi Jerry,

I suspect the developer, John van Breda, is the only person who has ever done an UKSI import in to Indicia. He'll have worked with Chris Raper at NHM who watches another section of this forum, https://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewforum.php?id=16. Chris is the source I would approach for the latest version.

Regarding the PR, it looks like it is against your fork rather than https://github.com/Indicia-Team/indicia-docs.

Would be great if you could help us by further updating the available information based on how you get along.

Regards,
Jim Bacon.

I don't think there is any online access - think you have to request it from NHM (Chris)

@Jim Bacon: yes I've just left it like that for now as I make PRs so rarely I always need to check how to do them. I should be at BRC tomorrow.

@charliebarnes: how do other people populate their taxa tables? They are a bit too complex to want to create sample data de novo. I was really just following the documentation.

Re: Source for UKSI data

I'm an outlier - working from Lancaster - so regret I won't be seeing you tomorrow.

Most UK users of Indicia take advantage of the community warehouse hosted by BRC so do not need to populate taxa tables as we've done it for them.

You can also completely sidestep UKSI if you want to and import a simple species list from a csv file. That was how Indicia worked before UKSI was added in. This did, of course, lead to taxonomic anarchy, as different people created different lists with different names. This was somewhat alleviated by adding NBN Taxon Version Keys in the external_key field of species lists.

This is what we did when we were just working off a restricted set of a species.

Re: Source for UKSI data

Hi Jerry,

I spent a few months dabbling with Indicia Aug to Oct this year. Part of the work I did was creating a set of instructions for myself to be able to repeat the process of establishing a fresh install, including importing the species dictionary. The doc is below (share link as I can't attach). It is my notes to myself to repeat the process so it is in the context of Greater Manchester Ecology Unit but might help you out. It is the result of quite a bit of trial and error, including using the official install guidance on indicia.org.uk

Re: Source for UKSI data

Paul that is a most comprehensive and useful document.

Not only does it tell me how to do what I asked as OP, but it makes it pretty clear how I can use Indicia with a self-generated taxa list.

Re: Source for UKSI data

Hi Paul,

That is an awesome bit of note-taking! Clearly a lot of work and a useful resource for others. I just felt a bit sad when I got to the end and found you stalled after so much work. Were scheduled tasks running to maintain the cache tables?
