Topic: Timandra griseata

Hi Chris, I this is a UKSI problem as it affects the NBN as well:

A record entered as Timanda griseata from the Recorder 3 checklist has the recommended TLIK of NBNSYS000000946 (Timandra griseata from the British Butterflies and Moths list). I believe this is incorrect as the currently accepted name is Timandra comae.

I'm not sure what needs synonymizing where, but if it helps, the NBN Atlas thinks they are distinct entities:

https://species.nbnatlas.org/species/NBNSYS0000005755

https://species.nbnatlas.org/species/NHMSYS0021143879

(hope that makes sense, I don't like dealing with TLIKS and TVKS on a Monday!)

Re: Timandra griseata

Oo err, further research suggests this to be... complicated: http://www.eje.cz/pdfs/eje/2005/04/05.pdf

If I'm correct in that we only have Timandra comae here, then we may end up with:
- Timandra griseata (Petersen, 1902), and
- Timandra griseata sensu auctt. nec Petersen, 1902

as a synonym of Timandra comae? Or perhaps all or T. griseata should be redetermined to be T. comae?

But I'm gonna duck out and leave this one to the moth experts...

Re: Timandra griseata

Hi Charlie - have you checked the current UKSI arrangement? It seems to synonymise a lot of these bad names and this might have happened during the recent Lep checklist update, not sure:

How does that look?

Re: Timandra griseata

I did and just got more confused :-S

Shouldn't NBNSYS0000005755 be sunk as a synonym of NHMSYS0021143879 (and perhaps amended to sensu auct brit)? As I understand it, anything recorded in the UK as Timandra griseata (Petersen, 1902) is actually Timandra comae Schmidt, 1931.

For instance, Recorder isn't picking up that Timandra griseata entered using the Recorder 3 checklist is a BAP species and the 'facts' on the UKSI doesn't refer to Timandra griseata (Petersen, 1902) but Timandra comae Schmidt, 1931?

Re: Timandra griseata

Yes, I think you're right - griseata is only ever listed as a junior synonym of comae in British terms - I'm synonymised it :)
