Topic: Malva setigera and Althea hirsuta

On the NBN rough marsh-mallow is listed as Malva setigera as the preferred name. However on the NHM site it is Althea hirsuta. The latter is the usual and well recognised name. The former is very rarely used. So who is right?

Malva setigera is from Stace 3 - a nice summary from Suffolk: https://issuu.com/suffolknaturalistssoc … cs/tsns46k

What is the official name though. I'm assuming the NHM is the top authority. Some of the changes in Stace would make grown people cry (Sanguisorba minor to Poterium sanquisorba is a clear indication that we're just being scammed).

Re: Malva setigera and Althea hirsuta

Hi Graham, Stace3 is the standard naming and the UKSI follows it very closely but sadly (and confusingly!) the NHM's copy of the UKSI on the website is very out of date. I'm currently trying to get it updated but I have to work through other techies and we're having difficulty finding the expertise and the time to get it done. If you'd like to check anything then you're very welcome to try out my sandbox/development site: http://nbn-sd-dev.nhm.ac.uk/
