Re: Bradley & Fletcher numbers

Within the taxon dictionary, butterflies and moths have a Bradley & Fletcher number. This can be seen in the details pane of the taxon dictionary like this:

Question is, where in the db are these codes stored? I need to extract them for a job.

Cheers,
Charles

Re: Bradley & Fletcher numbers

Dear Charles,

Codes are stored in the LST_ITM_CODE field in the TAXON_LIST_ITEM table (codes are stored against lists rather than taxa). You will therefore need to build a query that extracts rows in TAXON_LIST_ITEM that relate to the Bradley & Fletcher checklist and their associated taxa.

That's great, thanks Charles.

Re: Bradley & Fletcher numbers

But why are some of the codes not displayed in the taxon information pane? Almost all the entries in the British Isles List of Lichens and Lichelicolous Fungi dictionary have a BLS code against them, and the codes show correctly if the taxa are included in a recording card, but only about half of them get displayed in the taxon dictionary itself.

Re: Bradley & Fletcher numbers

Hi Janet

I've had a quick look at this but can't fathom why some codes display and some don't.

John (Dorset Software) - wondered whether you could say if this is likely to be a bug or a data issue? Some codes in [Taxon_List_Item].[Lst_Itm_Code] aren't displayed in the details pane in the Taxon Dictionary Browser.

Many thanks,

Re: Bradley & Fletcher numbers

Hi Janet & Sarah

When you view the taxon dictionary, you are viewing the code for just the item on the list and not looking for codes in other lists. When you view a record card, the system is looking to see if any of the other lists have a code for the taxon.

Re: Bradley & Fletcher numbers

Yes, but I only use the BLS dictionary (British Isles List of Lichens and Lichenicolous Fungi) and that is where the codes are held. Some are displayed, others not. The taxon facts that we added to the dictionary a while back are also erratic, sometimes they show and sometimes not. Other lichen recorders are reporting the same thing so it is not just happening on my system.

Could it be something to do with our dictionary not being set as the preferred list for lichens (which it should be!), perhaps our information is not being shown if there is also information held against the species in another dictionary?

This gives me the chance to raise another issue which may be related. The synonyms shown are taken from all the dictionaries and not just ours, so our careful weeding out of incorrect synonyms over the last few years has been a waste of time as they still appear from out of date sources. Is there any way of limiting the information shown in the taxon window to just that from the dictionary being viewed? The user can always click on the other dictionary links to view the species there.

Thanks,

Janet

Re: Bradley & Fletcher numbers

Janet,
Sorry for the delay. There are two points here:
- the code not appearing looks odd - we will raise a CCN for this though it is unlikely to be the next version
- the synonymy issue - the lichen list does have a much more restricted synonymy in - so that information / work has not been lost. The synonymy information appearing in the window though is not specific to the list being viewed but everything that Recorder things is a synonym. I assume what you are saying is that there are names listed as synonyms that are not synonyms of the current species? If you could provide an example or two that would be useful as it is worth getting to the bottom of it as the synonymy listed is what Recorder is using in the background. eg. if there is a record against one of the synonyms it would be reported against the preferred name.
Best wishes
