Topic: HTML on Forum

Chris,

I used to use HTML mark-up codes (e.g. , and , etc.) on posts within the UK Species Inventory/Dictionary part of the Forum to positive effect (to my mind).  However, I now note that the use of HTML codes seems to have been turned off and all of the codes are now shown/displayed rather than being operated upon by the Forum software.

Could I possibly ask why they have been turned off ??

Many thanks,
Steve

Re: HTML on Forum

It's the whole forum, not just the UK Species Inventory/Dictionary bit (as far as I can tell).

Re: HTML on Forum

That's interesting - I have had a look at Charlie is right - it is a site-wide setting and it has been switched off deliberately. Let me check with Mike Weideli and see if he knows why. It's possibly that it has a bug or allows people to do something dangerous so it was disabled, but if it is safe then I'd like to see it brought back because I also found it very useful.

Re: HTML on Forum

Something has happened - I am not sure what so that if this is enabled a error message crops up on the site. Probably to do with the fact that  the forum is not on the latest version of the  punbb. It needs investigating, it isn't in my remit and even if it was I am not sure I know enough to do what  is required. I will try to turn it back on, but not sure what the effect will be.

Re: HTML on Forum

Thanks Mike - we can play it by ear, but I agree it's not worth spending time fixing bugs on PunBB

Re: HTML on Forum

Is it not worth updating the Forum to the latest version of punBB Mike ??

Re: HTML on Forum

I have a feeling that the upgrade isn't as simple as bunging down the latest software. I had a similar issue with another forum that runs PunBB and we decided to scrap it rather than upgrade it. :(

Re: HTML on Forum

It's of no help, but it's the same error that the ALERC forum is getting :)

If I remember rightly, it's because PHP has been updated.

Re: HTML on Forum

Hi

I have turned it back on, so at least we can see what the issue is. I would think it is worth updating to the latest version, but I an not sure what the implication are or who could do it.

Re: HTML on Forum

Ahhh, I see the problem - there has been an upgrade to PHP that deprecated/retired one of the commands (preg_replace()) that PunBB is using to do the find/replace of the BBCode symbols. It will always fail on all BBCode unless the PunBB software is upgraded or at least this segment of code is changed/bodged-up.

Re: HTML on Forum

Still seems to work despite the error messages  . I can leave it on as long as no one minds the error messages, until we find a solution ?

Re: HTML on Forum

It would seem that version of php the forum was on ceased to be supported so the service provider automatically moved it to php 5.5, which caused the problem. There is a possible solution at the link below which means replacing various files. I have access to the backend, but this is not something I feel confident to do without experimenting on another less important site and without authority from the NBN.  I have contacted the NBN to see what they want to do.

Re: HTML on Forum

On investigation making this change didn't look very risky, so I have had a go. For the record I renamed the files leaving them in the original folder and replaced them with the files in the download from punbb (see above)

The files involved are

admin/extensions.php (renamed zextensions.php)
include/cache.php (renamed zcache.pho)
include/dblayer/pgsq.php (renamed zpgsq.php)
include/parser.pho (renamed  zparser.php)
moderate.php (renamed zmoderate.php)
viewtopic.php  (renamed viewtopic.php)

If there is a problem then it will be easy to reverse the change.

Based on the limited testing I have done it looks Ok. Let me know if you note see any problems.  ALERC  may be able to use the same fix. We are on punbb 1.4.2 . Installing 1.4.4 may also fix the problem. but may have other implications.

Re: HTML on Forum

That's really nice work - thanks Mike - let's see how it goes. The BBCode was very useful so it's good to have it back :)
