Topic: English Names for Bees

Chris,

I received my new book "Field Guide to the Bees of Great Britain and Ireland" by Steven Falk and Illustrated by Richard Lewington yesterday (Friday  6th Nov 2015).  All of the bees detailed within the book have now been allocated English/Vernacular Names.  Having checked on the UKSI I have noticed that most of these are 'new' names and are not listed.  I am sure the new book will generate a resurgence in the recording of bees over the next few years - similar in vein to the way Alan Stubbs Hoverfly book dramatically increased the number of Syrphid records and a boom in Hoverfly recording years ago.

Can I ask whether these new synonyms are to be included soon within the UKSI and thence into the Recorder family or will they take a while to incorporate as people feel they become 'necessary' ???

Cheers and thanks.
Steve.

Re: English Names for Bees

Hi Steve

I'd be happy to add them if someone could get them into a digital format (spreadsheet) so that they could be imported easily. Ideally something like Common Name, Recommended_TVK (or at least the scientific binomial with authority in another column) and in that way I could import them quite quickly.

I'm not sure if Steve has a spreadsheet of the names but I can email him to ask. :)

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Thanks Chris - emailing Steve would I think be the best way forward but if he cannot help then I could generate a list.  Are the TVK's on the UKSI at all ??

Re: English Names for Bees

Tonight Steve managed to get me a list of the bee names. I have imported the missing ones and it all looks good so far :)
