Topic: R6 startup error

I haven't posted a message for ages as all has been working well... until today. I wished to delete a record and so tried to start R6 in the usual way but I got an error message (attached). The crucial part, for me, is:

The Error Path setting is missing or incorrect. Recorder is not installed properly and cannot start.

This is a puzzle as it was installed over two years ago, has worked well in the interim, but today won't start. As far as I am aware I have made no changes to my computer that would have caused this. Can someone please help me to get it going again?

Thanks in anticipation, Ian

Re: R6 startup error

Something  has messed up your registry, or a file path has accidentally been change. Recorder will not have changed either of these things.

Are you comfortable accessing the registry ?  If so look in HKEY CuRRENT USER/Software/Dorset Software/Recorder 6/ Setting. Here (on the right hand side) you should  be able to see what the 'Error File Path ' is set to. Make sure you have this folder and that you can add files to it and modify them. Quickest way to check this is to open a  new text files (Notepad) in this folder and see if this works and you can edit  the files. Default for error files is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Recorder 6\User Files\Errors\.  Report back what you find so I can advise further.

If you are concerned about the registry then let me know and I will be more specific or talk you through the checks.

Let me know your Operating System and whether your  system is 32 or 64 bit  as this will help with further instructions.

Re: R6 startup error

Hi Mike

Many thanks for your reply. I looked at the HKEY path you gave and under 'Setting' there was no 'Error File Path' so I used Edit, New, Key to add it (it looks like a folder in Windows Explorer). I tried to use Save As in Notepad to save a file to that new Key but was unable to do so as Notepad would not accept the path HKEY CURRENT USER/Softwrae/etc as a file location and deleted it.

In the picture I attached to my first file there is the following line: Windows 7 x64 Service Pack 1 build 7601. I assume that means my Windows 7 is 64bit.

Should I have added the 'Error File Path' key as I did?
How do I get files from Notepad to save to it?
I tried to save the file as HKEY CURRENT USER etc with both \ and / as separators and neither version was accepted as a valid path.

What do I try to do next, please?

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best, Ian

Re: R6 startup error

You should be able to add it directly in the registry. Find settings and  right click on it (on the word settings) . Choose 'new string value'.  This will create an entry which you must name 'Error Path'.  Right click on this new entry and you will  have a window which allows you to enter a file path. It doesn't matter where it goes as long it is a valid path. Default is normally C:\Users\Public\Documents\Recorder 6\Errors\   If you right click on Report Path and choose modify you can copy the entry from here (use Cancel to avoid change this ). Then paste it into the Error Path path and modify the end to read \Errors\ . Click OK to save.

Assuming nothing else has gone this should fix things.

Re: R6 startup error

Hi Mike

When I tried as you suggested I got the message that 'Error Path' existed. I scrolled up to it and found the path was not as you quoted in that it missed the \User Files before the last \Errors\. I added the User Files part then closed down and rebooted. When I restarted I still get the same message when I try to start R6.

To show you the state of the Registry now, I have attached a screen shot. I think all is as you have suggested to me. No I can't find an option to attach a picture and I have not been able to copy and paste the screenshot... The entry says:

Error Path       REG_SZ       C:\Users|Public\Documents\Recorder 6\User Files\Errors\

Should the User Files bit be there? Also, if the Error Path exists in Settings why is R6 saying it is not there?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, Ian

Re: R6 startup error

Is the folder there ?  Navigate to C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Recorder 6 and see if the folder Errors exists. If not create it.  R6 may have changed  the Registry if it couldn't find it so this may need checking again.

Re: R6 startup error

Hi Mike

I looked at C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\ and there wasn't a Recorder 6 folder (nor was there a \User Files\ folder), so I added a Recorder 6 folder and then an Errors subfolder.

That meant the path to the Errors folder was different to that in the Registry as it had a \User Files\ before the Recorder 6. I took out the \User Files bit in the registry and rebooted. R6 still won't start.

So, do I need to modify the location of the Errors folder to be in:

C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\User Files\Recorder 6\Errors\

and then make that same path again in the Registry?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, Ian

Re: R6 startup error

There should be a folder which corresponds with the registry entry. Where it varies depending when R6 was installed, but it doesn't matter as long as they are in step. I would suggest C:\Users\Public\Documents\Recorder 6\Errors\ as the registry entry.

However for some Microsoft reason  to navigate to this you need to go through

C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Recorder 6\

Re: R6 startup error

Hi Mike

I matched the file paths to what you put in your last post. This time it didn't start but did leave an Error message in the new folder. This time it says:

The External File Path setting is missing or incorrect...

I don't know what it means by the 'External File Path'. Are we nearer to a solution, or are there likely to be more messages as each tweek is done?

I would be very grateful for your suggestion(s).

All the best, Ian

Re: R6 startup error

I am very grateful to Mike for his assistance in resolving this problem. In case the solution may be of help to others I will give an account of the problem and the solution...

It seems that a Windows Update may have deleted some empty folders (we couldn't think of another explanation) and the two folders were:

C:\Recorder6\Errors\       and
C:\Recorder6\User Files\External Files\

In trying to resolve the problem it seems that R6 tried to re-establish these files but put in unwanted parts in the new path. To ensure that the folders are where they should be, run REGEDIT and right-click on HKEY CURRENT USER/Software/Dorset Software/Recorder 6/Settings and ensure that for Error Path and External File Path the settings are the same pattern as the other paths within settings. They should be the same as the paths to the locations of the real folders. When this is achieved R6 should start!

Again, many thanks to Mike for his help!  Ian
