Topic: Bluebell Rust (Uromyces muscari)

Chris,

Could the English/Vernacular Name of 'Bluebell Rust' please be applied as a synonym under Uromyces muscari ?  It currently doesn't seem to be available in the UKSI ! - http://nbn-sd-dev.nhm.ac.uk/taxonbrowse … ebell+Rust

See here:  http://www.ispotnature.org/species-dict … %20muscari

Many thanks.

Re: Bluebell Rust (Uromyces muscari)

He Steve - is this common name on Liz Holden's approved list of fungus common names? I'd be happy to add it but it might be worth running it past her and the panel, just in case it has another host in a different lifecycle stage :)

Sadly, the list (http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/library/english-names/) doesn't have Uromyces muscari on it at all !!

Re: Bluebell Rust (Uromyces muscari)

Might be worth bunging the name to her just to be put out to the masses for approval. These rusts can go across 2 or more species so I wouldn't want to make a confusing common name, and we will probably be standardising on her common names for the fungi anyway. She let me sneak in Alexanders Rust the other day so that was fine :D

Re: Bluebell Rust (Uromyces muscari)

Hi Steve

I heard back from Liz today:

"Hi Chris, happy to include this on same basis as Alexanders... :-) Liz"

So it has gone in :)  I think, with the popularity of pan-species recording/listing and the relative ease of identification of many rusts (by the host species), it serves the recording community well to have common names like this :)

Cheers

Re: Bluebell Rust (Uromyces muscari)

Thanks Chris (and Liz) - appreciated.    Yes, I agree that a few Vernacular Names in this area would be useful and would help in the promotion and recording of such species.  In fact, from my own recording this Spring, there may be one or two other rusts for which I will be requesting English Names.

I have just been informed, this evening, of the reprint of the book "Dutch Rust Fungi" by Aad Termorshuizen and have ordered a copy.

Cheers and thanks again

Steve.
