Topic: English/Vernacular Names for Bony Fish

Chris,

Could you possibly add the relevant English/Vernacular Names for the following bony fish please ?

- Gwyniad (Coregonus pennantii) – Snowdonia only.
- Schelly (Coregonus stigmaticus) – Lake District only.
- Pollan (Coregonus pollan) – Ireland only.
- Powan (Coregonus clupeoides) – Scotland only.
- Ferox Trout (Salmo ferox) – Ireland only, validity questionable (possibly a brown trout variant)
- Gillaroo (Salmo stomachicus) – Ireland only
- Sonaghan (Salmo nigripinnis) – Ireland only
- Haddy Charr (Salvelinus killinensis) – Scotland only
- Melvin Charr (Salvelinus grayi) – Ireland only
- Orkney Charr (Salvelinus inframundus) – Orkney Islands (where extirpated) and Scotland only

See here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_en … tish_Isles

Thanks.

Re: English/Vernacular Names for Bony Fish

Hi Steve

I've had a look at these and have created the ones that I can create without any expert guidance:

- Orkney Charr (Salvelinus inframundus)    NHMSYS0021120610
- Melvin Charr (Salvelinus grayi)     NHMSYS0021120616
- Haddy Charr (Salvelinus killinensis)    NHMSYS0021120622
- Sonaghan (Salmo nigripinnis)        NHMSYS0021120628
- Gillaroo (Salmo stomachicus)        NHMSYS0021120634
- Ferox Trout (Salmo ferox)        NHMSYS0021120640

There is a huge amount of confusion over the taxonomic status of Coregonus though and we have these common names but they are attached to a different name:

- Schelly (Coregonus stigmaticus)  =lavaretus
- Gwyniad (Coregonus pennantii) =lavaretus
- Powan (Coregonus clupeoides) =lavaretus
- Pollan (Coregonus pollan)  =autumnalis

The common names appear on the recommended checklist for freshwater fish so I would be loath to change them without a freshwater fish expert coming forward and confirming that the taxonomy has been sorted out.

Hope that helps a little :)
