Topic: Multiple Recommended TLIKs

I'm trying to get my head round some locally important species, and as usual Lichens are causing me some headaches. So I am trying to decide how to assign a local importance to Caloplaca herbidella.

I would usually find the Recommended_Taxon_List_Item Key in Index_Taxon_Name (ITN) and use it to get the Preferred_Taxon_Version_Key (pTVK). This works fine with 95% of the names I look up, but occasionally I have to check the Taxon Rank to avoid allocating an 'Agg.' rather than the species (or vice versa).

With Caloplaca herbidella, there are two RTLIK choices in ITN:
NHMSYS0020980684 and NHMSYS0000357670
thus giving me to pTVKs:
NHMSYS0020987556 and NBNSYS0000039595

In both cases these appear to point at true species names not forms, aggs, sub species or varieties.

Using the go To Key Add-in, I can only get to  a species from NHMSYS0020980684 - the other one doesn't seem to go anywhere (although it is in the dictionary!). The add-in recognises that NHMSYS0000357670 is a Lichen, but does not take me to a species (or form, synonym etc). So clearly R6 wants me to use NHMSYS0020980684 (and thus pTVK = NHMSYS0020987556), but why then are there two choices of RTLIK in ITN? Or is this just something that no-one has got around to updating yet?

For my purposes I'll use both pTVKs just to be on the safe side, but this anomaly intrigues me.

Dave

Re: Multiple Recommended TLIKs

My problem posted yesterday with the NBN Record Cleaner and lichens (http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=21771#p21771 ) may be related?

Validation is failing a lot of records on the grounds of them not having a unique scientific name, but I can't see what is non-unique about Parmelia saxatilis, Parmelia omphalodes, Physcia tenella, Ramalina farinacea, Lecanora soralifera, Cliostomum griithii, Hypotrachyna revoluta, Lecanora dispersa etc. etc. You may have just given us a clue.

Re: Multiple Recommended TLIKs

It was once possible to have multiple Recommended Taxon List Item keys for a given Taxon List ITem Key, but not now.  For the last few years this hasn't been the case and a  Taxon List Item Key can only have one Recommended Taxon List Item key. Recorder Cleaner is not something supported as part of R6 so can't help with the main query.

Re: Multiple Recommended TLIKs

That may be the case, but a name can have more than one RTLIK, so if one was using ITN as a means of obtaining recommended keys (I have no idea if this is how Record Cleaner does things, but it is what I use), then you can reach an impasse as outlined above.
I presume that Recorder itself is not having a problem with these discrepancies, but they are there nonetheless.

Re: Multiple Recommended TLIKs

I think there are very few true duplicates in tha database now as Chris has checks which find these. However, it is not just the name which is involved,  but  name, attribute and  author (also rank I think in some circumstances).  If any of these are  different then they are considered different species.  In both R6 and  the gateway it is the taxon version key not the name which needs to be unique. Each recommended taxon version key represents a different Organism.  When matching on names R6 will only automatically except the match if there is only one option. Otherwise the user has to make the choice. Look like  something similar apples to the record checker. Also care needs to be taken with sub genus a this can  lead to spurious matching.
