Topic: Bat designation problems in R6 and wider

I have just noticed whilst reporting on bat species on the Scottish Biodiversity List in R6 it omits records from Common Pipistrelle (TVK NHMSYS0020001355).

I think this is incorrect.

It does however list records for Pipistrellus pipistrellus sensu lato TVKNHMSYS0020001356.

Interestingly, if you view the NBN gateway entry for Common Pipistrelle (TVK NHMSYS0020001355) it shows no designations listed whatsoever!

The issue for the SB list may have arisen from the spreadsheet on the Scottish Government site (http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Envir … tylist/SBL) which lists 'Pipistrellus pipistrellus' but the map link is to the TVK for the sensu lato taxon (NHMSYS0020001356), whereas I think this should be to the sensu stricto Common Pipistrelle as the technical report refers specifically to 'Common Pipistrelle'.

Anyway, unless I'm missing something obvious there seems to be something fishy about all this and it would be good if this could be clarified and fixed in a future update...

Re: Bat designation problems in R6 and wider

Hi Mark

I have taken a quick look and on my system here and the accepted name has a designation of:

Wales NERC S.42 (Sect.42), NERC Act 2006. Section 42: Species of Principal Importance in Wales (version:1)

But I have sent an email to Dario at the JNCC who maintains the various lists, just so that he can check out what the current situation should be.

Best wishes,

Re: Bat designation problems in R6 and wider

Hi both,

I have checked our database (the one we use for the spreadsheet and the NBN Gateway designations).

Our system indicates that it should be, at least, one designation for Pipistrellus pipistrellus sensu stricto TVK NHMSYS0020001355 from The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2010). Not sure why I has not been picked up by the NBN.

We will look into this deeper and fix it up in the next update (January 2015). Usually the spreadsheet is published first and the NBN Gateway follows in a periord of 4 weeks. It is a really long process, this is why it is not done on regular basis, so I really apologise for that.

Regards,

Dario
