Topic: new butterfly species
Hi
I have a request for a new species of butterfly to be added to the species dictionary. It is for a species of butterfly only found in Ireland.
Leptidea juvernica Williams, 1946 Cryptic Wood White
All records on the NBN Gateway for this species are currently assigned to Leptidea reali (NHMSYS0020678361). Leptidea reali should now be listed as a synonym of Leptidea juvernica. All records recorded under reali need to be moved to juvernica. These records all reside within the CEDaR dataset.
An added complication is that reali does actually refer to records in an area of the Pyrénées. The advice I have been given by Brian Nelson, who has been closely involved in this work, is:
“All records labelled as reali have to be changed to Leptidea juvernica as that is what the species is now called. Leptidea reali can be listed as a synonym of juvernica. I think correctly it should be written as Leptidea juvernica Williams, 1946 = Leptidea reali Reissinger, 1989 partim. ( partim. Denotes that juvernica only includes part of what was originally reali)”
Additionally there is a species which needs to be removed.
Remove - https://data.nbn.org.uk/Taxa/NBNSYS0000042373 Leptidea sinapis subsp. juvernica Williams, 1946, INSECT - BUTTERFLY, 1 record(s) taxon (1 record which is incorrectly given to that sub-species. This should be simply sinapis). This record needs to be updated and then this subsp. deleted.
I hope all this makes sense.
