Topic: BLS Lichen Species Dictionary

It's great to see that the major update to the lichen dictionary has reached Recorder 6 at last. A huge amount of work has gone into this, mainly by Chris Raper and Brian Coppins, for which many thanks.

There are a few problems with the detail, which I will post separately.

Also we are very disappointed to see that the list is still not set as a preferred list and the name has not been changed, despite this having been agreed some time ago. Chris Raper confirmed on 13/2/14 that he had changed the name to "BLS Checklist of Lichens and Lichenicolous Fungi", and set it as a recommended list, so we had high hopes. As it is, R6 users don't find the BLS list and then complain loudly to us that the lichen list in Recorder 6 is hopelessly out of date. This is irritating, to say the least, and it gives us a lot of problems with data that is exported to us. Perhaps this could be resolved in a future dictionary update?

Re: BLS Lichen Species Dictionary

The name and the preferred list indicator as far as R6 is concerned is controlled by JNCC and not by the NHM.  As I manage the processing for  JNCC I will make the change at the next opportunity, once I have approval.

Thanks, Mike, I wasn't aware of JNCC's role in this.

Re: BLS Lichen Species Dictionary

The  dictionary upgrade which makes the list preferred is with JNCC and should
be on the web site shortly.  In order to fit  the way preferred lists are named in Recorder the name will be "  LICHENS and Lichenicolous Fungi BLS checklist of Lichens and Lichenicolous Fungi "

Re: BLS Lichen Species Dictionary

Mike,

This change has solved many of our reporting problems, and we can actually use recommended names at last. After 10 years of struggling with errors in the preferred and recommended names for lichens this is real progress!

There are still a few problem taxa which will need redeterminations so I'll send the details to you separately.
