Topic: Recorder 6 Help Files

On our R6 network install, only the computer that has the server program installed on it can access the help file for Recorder.  The other workstations manage to bring up the content index but don't display any content.  Anyone know how to fix this?

The machines are all running Windows 7 if that makes any difference.

I remember downloading html help add-on to get it to work.

Tried that.  Install said that there was a newer version already installed, and it had no effect.

We have the same problem on W7 machines. The fix we used to use under XP doesn't work for W7

Re: Recorder 6 Help Files

Below is the information I have been supplying about problems with the Help in Recorder 6 for years. I hope it contains something of use.

The Help problem is a variation on the one Sarah Shaw mentions in her post on the forum on 20/04/07 - see http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=336 . This post offers one solution to not being able to use the Help but I haven't tried it. It also contains a link to another solution but if you are not happy with changing the registry in the way suggested, a third solution is to copy the help file - Rec20Hlp.chm in the Help folder in the Recorder 6 folder on the server - to the Recorder folder on the workstation and edit the Help Path in the registry - HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software - Dorset Software - Recorder 6 - Settings - Help Path. This needs to be done on each workstation. There is some more information from JNCC below and a variation on this on the Recorder web-site http://www.jncc.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=4981 .

If you copy Rec20Hlp.chm to the workstation you will be able to open it there if your machine can open .chm files, but not from within Recorder 6 unless you make the changes in the registry. See also Mike Weideli’s post 19/06/09 http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=4528#p4528.

JNCC, 7/04/06: Both the help and the getting started guide rely on compiled help (.CHM) files. A security fix to the Windows operating system issued by Microsoft (security update 896358 or security update 890175) disables use of these files across a network (or the internet). In Microsoft's words "The symptoms are an expected and intended effect of installing the security updates." There is a Knowledge Base article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892675) about this which includes fixes (a registry setting to unblock files from particular URLs). However, Stuart has not managed to get this working fully (after unblocking the server directory - the CHM file is opened successfully and the index and contents can be viewed and searched, but the page content still does not show!).
