Topic: Taxonomic Order

Apologies for cross-posting, but I just wanted to highlight the discussion we've been having on the taxonomic sort order in Recorder 6 in a thread in another part of the Board in case it is relevant here.

I'm afraid I don't understand how the translation from the Species Inventory to Recorder 6 works in detail and how other uses of the SI sort taxa, but I would like to just highlight that all work done on creating some sort of taxonomic order within checklists is much valued and anything that can be done to improve lists will be appreciated and I'm sure used in a variety of applications. For example when browsing the species inventory on the NHM website it would be nice to be able to browse in taxonomic order as well as alphabetically.

Re: Taxonomic Order

Hi Teresa

Thanks for your support - actually I have just got off the phone with Mike Weideli where we discussed this very issue. It sounds like Mike has been doing some really excellent work to construct a 'weighting' column and to fill in some gaps in the Organism's tree. I will be incorporating those changes in the next month or so (workload permitting) and then maintaining it as a part of the UKSI.

The NHM website uses a 'first draft' of the Organism table, without a weighting and without sub-groupings, but we have always aimed to link everything together when we had the time. As you can imagine though, there has always been something more important to do! ;)  I would actually like to make quite a few changes to the NHM website but the museum's development team are snowed under with work so it has had to go on the back-burner. I intend to push my case a bit harder this winter when I have been promised some developer time :)

Best wishes,
Chris R.
