Topic: Coenosiinae

You might need something strong before you tackle this one, Chris.

The easy one that started it first.  Fonseca has Caricea tigrina which is not recognised by the Dictionary.  The Dictionary has Coenosia tigrina, but Caricea should be there as a synonym at least.

Then the rest.  Search for Caricea on the Gateway and you get a load of species that should be synonymised with Lispocephala, but are not.  The two genera return separate and quite different maps.  I will not go into more detail as the problem should be obvious, but it might be worth checking the rest of the subfamily.

Re: Coenosiinae

Hi Murdo,

That's an interesting one - so a potential duplicate if taxa under accepted names & synonyms? I will check that out.

Thanks

Re: Coenosiinae

It seems to be a problem with R3.3 and the Passmore-Edwards lists, Chris.  I suspect that the names in these lists are not properly synonymised with the Diptera list, and records entered with these older checklists are being treated as separate taxa.

Re: Coenosiinae

That explains a lot actually - the R3.3 list has a lot of errors in it. I will check it out today and see what I find ;)

EDIT: actually that looks quite simple - they're all just straight synonyms for the equivalent Lispocephala spp. so I will move those right now.

Re: Coenosiinae

Hi Murdo

That's all fixed now - with the new synonym:
Caricea tigrina (Fabricius, 1775) tvk NHMSYS0020979144

Best wishes,
Chris R.
