Topic: Another 'new' Species at the Dundreggan Estate

A sub-species of orchid was found at the Dundreggan Estate near Loch Ness which also needs adding to the dictionary:

Lapland marsh-orchid (Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides subsp. francis-drucei)

Again see:  http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/sawfly.html#cr

However, the PlantList at Kew shows this name as a synonym:

Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides var. francis-drucei (Wilmott) F.M.Vázquez is a synonym of Dactylorhiza traunsteineri subsp. traunsteineri

See:  http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-372540

Not quite sure what you will wish to do with this name Chris.

Cheers.

Re: Another 'new' Species at the Dundreggan Estate

This is a bit confusing because we have "Dactylorhiza traunsteineri subsp. francis-drucei (Wilmott) Soó" [tvk NHMSYS0100001260], which is a synonym of "Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides (Pugsley) R.M. Bateman & Denholm" [tvk NHMSYS0020116813] (Narrow-leaved Marsh-orchid).

We also have "Lapland Marsh Orchid" but this is listed as a synonym of "Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides subsp. lapponica" [tvk NHMSYS0020116861].

I will get in touch with Murdo at the HBRG to see if we can track down the precise meaning of the name.

Yes, it seemed confusing to me too.

Once again - many thanks Chris - I think Murdo (and HBRG) are probably the best ones to contact here for elucidation.

Cheers.

Re: Another 'new' Species at the Dundreggan Estate

Just chatted with Dr Mark Spencer and I think I have a handle on what's going on - it's a fairly new revision of this group of Dactylorhiza. At the moment we have:

Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides
- Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides subsp. lapponica

But we should have:

Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides
- Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides subsp. traunsteinerioides
- Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides subsp. francis-drucei (includes all francis-drucei and lapponica names)

I just need to work out in my head how I am going to do it!! :)

Re: Another 'new' Species at the Dundreggan Estate

OK, this was a really nasty one to do but I think I've got it:

Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides subsp. francis-drucei (Wilmott) R.M. Bateman & Denholm
tvk NHMSYS0020978920
(now includes lapponica)

Dactylorhiza traunsteinerioides subsp. traunsteinerioides (Pugsley) Landwehr ex R.M. Bateman & Denholm
tvk NHMSYS0020978914

Hope I don't have to revisit this one any time soon ... Dactylorhiza are a real nightmare! ;)
