Are you due a dictionary upgrade? My bang up to date recorder taxon dictionary gives (according to the extra info addin) the recommended common name Beckland Thyme.
Obviously this is still incorrect as it should be Breckland Thyme, but it is a bit better than it was.
While we are at it though. At the same time the above was corrected (incorrectly) some other changes were made.
Thymus polytrichus (previously recommended common name was Wild Garden) now has no common name (or is listed as Thymus polytrichus actually). What is wrong with the name Wild Thyme which we have all used for years?
Thymus pulegioides (previously and still Large Garden) should be Large Thyme
And I note that Thymus vulgaris (which I don't remember seeing there before) is correctly named Garden Thyme.
I'm sure I have been ranting about this for about 4 years now. It is neither contentious, nor rocket science, so why can it not be fixed?
Hi folks, I have just had a look into this at my end. It seems that the correct names (or at least satisfactory names) are in the database but we don't have a concept of recommended common name in our data - it is a construct created during the Recorder6 taxonomy preparation process. If Mike can suggest a change that I could make at my end to help then I would be happy to do it. We are planning to introduce an ability to prioritize the common names (per language) but this would take quite a large amount of work.
OK, I have been looking into this with Mike Weideli and it seems that the "Garden" names have come from the BSBI vascular plant checklist, because this is the recommended checklist for this group. After chatting with Fred Rumsey we think that those names must be a mistake in the 2007 downloadable checklist because the latest Stace uses the names that have been suggested here. With all that in mind I will retrospectively change the BSBI list to use the corrected names and this should fix the problem in Recorder too :)
Thanks Chris
