Topic: Ceutorhynchus punctiger / Glocianus punctiger

There is some problem with these two taxa:

Glocianus punctiger (Gyllenhal, 1837) occurs on the preferred BEETLE checklist, but no mention of Ceutorhynchus
Ceutorhynchus punctiger Sahlberg, 1835 occurs on the Recorder 3.3 list, but no mention of Glocianus
Both are reported as preferred taxon in Recorder 6 and on the NBN Gateway

BugGuide.net give Ceutrorhynchus punctiger as a synonym of Glocianus punctiger (C.R. Sahlberg 1835), but if this is the case, then there is a problem with the authority for the Glocianus entry in Recorder and on the Gateway

Re: Ceutorhynchus punctiger / Glocianus punctiger

Hi Craig

Andrew came back to me on this one ... and I have done the necessary changes - wohoo!! Seems like it was a tricky one - as Andrew says:

"... It appears that Gyllenhal's punctiger is both a homonym and synonym of Sahlberg's punctiger. The synonymy will appear in the next edition of the beetles checklist like this:

GLOCIANUS Reitter, 1916
punctiger (Sahlberg, C.R., 1835)
= punctiger (Gyllenhal, 1837)

From your point of view, all uses of punctiger (whether in Ceutorhynchus or Glocianus, and whether Sahlberg or Gyllenhal) should equate to the same species, whose correct name is now Glocianus punctiger (Sahlberg, C.R., 1835)."
