Topic: Diptera Entries Needed on Dictionary

The main Diptera recorder in Cheshire has recently requested that a couple of species be added to the Dictionary.

The genus Xanthochlorus was revised a few years ago with the discovery of two new species for the British list.  These have still not found their way onto the taxon dictionary (in common with many others).  The missing Xanthochlorus (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) species are:

Xanthochlorus galbanus Chandler & Negrobov, 2008
Xanthochlorus silaceus Chandler & Negrobov, 2008

Could these be added please Chris.

Chris - just for additional information, the source is the Checklist of British Diptera by Peter Chandler, available to view in PDF form on the Dipterists Forum website.

You are probably aware of this electronic version - it is updated regularly in line with the changes and corrections published in the Dipterists Digest biannually.  Changes are highlighted for convenience.  There are numerous instances where these changes have not yet found their way onto the NBN taxon dictionary, and if time could be found, it would be a worthwhile exercise for someone to go through either the Digest since the date of the original publication of the Checklist (1998), or probably more easily by checking the highlighted entries in the PDF version against the NBN nomenclature.  In correspondence, Steve tells me that you have not had any changes notified from Peter Chandler since 2004.  I suspect this coincides with the date the electronic version first appeared, and may have been deemed superfluous in the light of this - just guessing.

Steve: Many thanks for summarising the changes - I will sort those out asap.

Bill (and all): Apologies generally for the lack of Diptera updates that have been included in recent years - updating the list is very high on my list of priorities. As a Dipterist myself I am more than a bit embarrassed that the situation has been left to get so out of hand, though I will accept a bit of ribbing for having made my first job here the updating of my own group, the Tachinidae! ;)

I have downloaded all of the update files and Stuart Ball has actually sent me a complete list (as of November 2012) in Excel format so that I can do some semi-automated checking of what we have already. If you have any names that are preventing you from recording or that are particularly in need of putting through then do let me know because ad-hoc name adds/changes can usually be done quite quickly.

Done! This was an easy one ... new distinct species are always my favourites to do because they need so little work in the database ;)

I forgot in my last reply  - there is one other I need for data entry.  It's in my other post of 11 January: the separation of Gonomyia abscondita as a valid species.

Hi Bill - no problem - the Gonomyia abscondita has just been done here on my copy - it will filter out quite soon hopefully. I am just wading my way through the changes for Dicranophragma :)
