Topic: a need for sensu lato and sensu stricto additions

The beetles Chaetarthria seminulum and Suphrodytes dorsalis were recently split into, respectively,  C. seminulum and C. simillima, and S. dorsalis and S. figuratus.  Both these splits have been implemented in the most recent dictionary upgrade to 1A.

However, there is an urgent need to have somewhere to put pre-split IDs of C. seminulum  and S. dorsalis and to be able to distiinguish between pre- and post-split IDs of these two species.  Please can we have sensu lato and sensu stricto additions to the species dictionary as was originally requested on 9/2/12 and 2/5/12

Re: a need for sensu lato and sensu stricto additions

Apologies if I missed those requests - I have had a quick look and have found the following:

Chaetarthria seminulum / simillima:

NBNSYS0000007735 Chaetarthria seminulum (Herbst, 1797)
NHMSYS0020973385 Chaetarthria seminulum (Herbst, 1797) s. lat.

NHMSYS0001717658 Chaetarthria simillima Vorst & Cuppen, 2003

Suphrodytes dorsalis / figuratus:

NHMSYS0001720268 Suphrodytes dorsalis (Fabricius, 1787)

No record for S.figuratus yet and no dorsalis s. lat.

I will look into it more tomorrow and let you know the outcome :)

Re: a need for sensu lato and sensu stricto additions

Thanks for that.  I have now located Chaetarthria seminulum s.lat. in the List of additional names.  My apologies for overlooking the entry.

I still cannot find Suphrodytes dorsalis s. lat. so I'd be grateful if you would correct the omission (assuming I've not overlooked that too).

Also, please would you amend the entry for the beetle Stictotarsus multilineatus (Falkenstrom, 1922).  It has swapped genus to Boreonectes.  The entry in Duff's latest checklist (2012) is:

BOREONECTES Angus, 2010
multilineatus (Falkenström, 1922)
griseostriatus sensu auctt. non(De   Geer, 1774

Thanks again for your help with that other matter.

Re: a need for sensu lato and sensu stricto additions

Hi Bob

No problem ... I would just hold-fire when using "Chaetarthria seminulum s.lat." at the moment. This is a relatively new name and I think it might be better to make the old "Chaetarthria seminulum" into a sens.lat. because then all old records would automatically be assigned to the correct taxon concept (ie. the old one, pre-split). If we just use this new sens. lat. then it would require all old records to be moved over to the new name, which seems a bit of a long-winded way of doing things. I am just looking into the potential pitfalls of the change and will let you know how I get on.

You are correct about the "Suphrodytes dorsalis s. lat." - that one has been omitted for some reason. I would plan to make the old TVK into a sens.lat. and then create 2 new names for the post-split taxa, if needed. I just want to have a few words with some taxonomists to make sure that I won't be creating more problems than I fix ;)

Boreonectes change duly noted - will sort that one out while I am at it. Andrew's very latest list hasn't been added yet but I am doing ad-hoc amendments to Coleoptera as people require them.

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Re: a need for sensu lato and sensu stricto additions

OK - I have done the easy one first:

genus Boreonectes Angus, 2010                tvk:NHMSYS0020977328
species Boreonectes multilineatus (Falkenstrom, 1922)    tvk:NHMSYS0020977334

Will get the 2 splits done in a jiffy when I have worked out a convincing plan ;)

Many thanks, Chris.  Your effort is much appreciated.

Re: a need for sensu lato and sensu stricto additions

OK, the last 2 have been finished giving the following changes:

NBNSYS0000007735 Chaetarthria seminulum (Herbst, 1797) s. lat.       (added s. lat.)
NHMSYS0020973385 Chaetarthria seminulum (Herbst, 1797)         (removed s. lat.)
NHMSYS0001717658 Chaetarthria simillima Vorst & Cuppen, 2003         (existing name)

This treats tvk NBNSYS0000007735 as a taxonomic concept and will mean that old records do not need to be changed to a new s.lat. name.

NHMSYS0001720268 Suphrodytes dorsalis (Fabricius, 1787) s. lat.     (added s. lat.)
NHMSYS0020977368 Suphrodytes dorsalis (Fabricius, 1787)               (new name for new concept)
NHMSYS0020977360 Suphrodytes figuratus (Gyllenhal, 1826)             (new name)

The amended TAXON_VERSION rows have had comments added to explain the change. The only slight side effect is that any checklist that uses the old TVKs will display a "s. lat." name ... which is taxonomically correct (and good for anyone recording) but might be a little confusing if you compare to paper copies of those old checklists.
