Topic: Viscum album in JNCC Designations Spreadsheet

Not sure where to feedback on the excellent JNCC designations spreadsheet to be found at http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/Files/Taxon_de … 111020.zip so I hope this gets through...

After upgrading our Recorder 6 dictionaries to Z and 10 we found an issue when linking our data with the JNCC spreadsheet using its Taxon Versions Keys.

Viscum album (Mistletoe) appears with two different TVKs in the Master List, NBNSYS0000003624 and NHMSYS0020470581. (This hadn't been an issue until after the dictionary upgrades, so I guess something else must have changed in relationship to this species).

There are a few other cases in the Master List of different TVKs for the same 'species', but these mostly seem to be sens lat. related. In this case though the difference seems to be only in the authority being Linnaeus or L.?

Hi Keith

I am guessing that the JNCC list is just quoting the name that each designatory list used, to be as precise as possible, hence the slightly different author and TVK. The TVK NHMSYS0020470581 (Viscum album Linnaeus) is technically an ill-formed name and the recommended name is TVK NBNSYS0000003624 (Viscum album L.), because it uses the accepted abbreviation for Linnaeus, so they have different TVKs and are treated differently in Recorder & the Gateway etc.

In the UK Species Inventory though we only recommend "Viscum album L.". :)

Thanks for looking into this Chris. If the JNCC spreadsheet could standardize on one or the other that would be helpful as I get double-reporting on mistletoe when I link it in, but it's not a major problem now that I know why.

No problem. You can possibly avoid the duplicates by running the TVKs through the NAMESERVER table and then using unique RECOMMENDED_TAXON_VERSION_KEYS. :)
