Topic: Illecebrum verticillatum

The Recorder 3 dictionary in Recorder has a common name of "Knot-Grass" for Illecebrum verticillatum - does anyone know if this a "valid" common name (it has not unsurpisingly caused a little confusion in our database!) ? (The NBN seems to think it isn't TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0000168164)

A quick search suggests other common names appear to be Verticillate Knot Grass, Whorled Knot-Grass.

Re: Illecebrum verticillatum

Hello Charlie

Knot-Grass is an illformed name in the species dictionary. The well formed English common name in the dictionary is Coral-necklace (Taxonversionkey: NBNSYS0200000362)

Best wishes

Re: Illecebrum verticillatum

This caused a bit of confusion in our database too as several knot grass moth records got matched to this species!

Definitely one to be aware of.

Re: Illecebrum verticillatum

The Recorder3 list is full of mistakes so it should be treated with caution. This "Knot Grass" has been marked as ill-formed and there is a well-formed vernacular so I would always sort the vernaculars by language and form and choose the well-formed name if present. :)
