Topic: Bellardia/Pseudonesia

After doing an import to R6 today, I think there is a problem with these two names.

Pseudonesia puberula (Zetterstedt, 1838)     TaxonVersionKey: NHMSYS0020442458 has the synonym Pseudonesia puberula (Zetterstedt)     TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0000030353 on the Gateway.

Bellardia pubicornis (Zetterstedt, [1838])     TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0100001923 has the synonyms:

Bellardia puberula (Zetterstedt, [1838])     TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0100026266
Musca puberula Zetterstedt, [1838]     TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0100026267
Tachina pubicornis Zetterstedt, [1838]     TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0100026265.

The Diptera list does not include Pseudonesia, but the similarities in the rest of the names makes me think the synonymy needs adjusting.

Re: Bellardia/Pseudonesia

Hi Murdo

Yes, well-spotted - that is listed on PESI as a synonym of Bellardia pubicornis (Zetterstedt, 1838) so I will demote those Pseudonesia puberula to a synonym.

I have actually been developing a semi-automated system for checking the database against other online catalogues. Nothing beats the human brain for making that final decision but I hope to at least narrow the field a little so that we can find any problems that have already been discovered and fixed in other catalogues.

Thanks,
Chris R.

Re: Bellardia/Pseudonesia

Thanks, Chris.

Does that keep the designation info correct, as the Gateway return for Pseudonesia has an RDB status, but the Bellardia return does not?

Re: Bellardia/Pseudonesia

Very good point and one I will investigate when I get to the office. But my guess is that it just depends how the records are analysed later. Pseudonesia still exists as a name and if you recorded anything under that name then that is what you recorded. But I have just changed the nameserver to impose a modern interpretation of what that name actually means. So on the NBN Gateway if they eventually map everything under the name Bellardia then you will see the designation associated with Bellardia because statuses are given to named taxa so they would stay with the name that the legislation used. That is my interpretation anyway - but it might change after my second cup of tea ;)
