Re: xporting to shapefile - unknown co-ordinate system error

I am getting a repeated error when I try to build a shapefile from the report wizrd of an unknown spatial system.

As the report is a polygon search of a known area... I wonder what is going on.

Presumably the polygon search has to base its query on the (Sample) Grid references that exist.
So if it can find the records in the first place - whats different about reading them again when building a shapefile?

If their are corruptions in the database - where should I be looking? At the Lat Long values or (I assume) the Sample Spatial Reference.

I seem to be able to plot the results reliably on the Base map - and it is able to convert that to a shapefile - albeit in a triangle form - the fourth vector being missed out.

So, lots of unresolved issues with the (our) Shapefile export.

Are other folk able to use the export facility reliably or are the problems similar? Is this our problem or the programs problem?

Re: xporting to shapefile - unknown co-ordinate system error

This is a problem that I've come across before (you seem to be hitting a few of those lately). It seems to be caused by certain grid references. I reported it to Lynn, but I'm not sure how far she got in reproducing it. Hopefully it'll get fixed in the next version.

Re: xporting to shapefile - unknown co-ordinate system error

Just an update;

I dug out the Sample.Spatial_ref and checked for anomalies (spaces everywhere), corrected them and repopulated the sample table with them.
This would seem to be working fine.

So thats solved for now.

Can I prod the triangle issue again.
When we do export to .shp - it builds a triangle rather than a square (SW,NW,NE corners).  Is this what others are experiencing or is it an anomaly here.
If it is a triangle - pretty though it is - how is that useful?

Re: xporting to shapefile - unknown co-ordinate system error

Matt, that's similar to a bug I found and reported, but in my case it was plotting four points in the polygon (i.e., three faces, E, S and W) and then not closing it, so when I removed the colour, it looked like a square without a top. To fix it I think I ran the repair geometry tool in ArcGIS which just closed off the square. Don't think that will work if you have a triangle, though.

Re: xporting to shapefile - unknown co-ordinate system error

See, I think I had that configuration originally - an open square, and thought that it was workable despite being wrong, but it seems to have shifted to a triangle now.

More shrugging.

Re: xporting to shapefile - unknown co-ordinate system error

Thanks for the tip about using the Arc repair geometry tool Charles. I wondered why the bottom of my squares were disappearing after exporting tetrads from Recorder 6!

I've now got a lovely layer of tetrads all correctly labelled on my lookup map template, so I don't have to put my poor little brain to work anymore working out what tetrads are in our search areas.

Although we still aren't using 6 here yet, I'm already finding it helpful just as a tool for slinging in data and then re-exporting to shapefiles and google earth.

Hope our open squares don't start turning into triangles too. :o
