How does the species dictionary deal with recording of taxa of unknown specific entity? For exampled how would Salticus sp. be recorded?

Would it be recorded as the genus Salticus (presumably this would work for higher taxa as well e.g. Salticidae)?

Yes, that's right. You can record at any level in the Taxon Dictionary so if you don't know the species then use the most specific level that you are certain of.
