Topic: Coenococcus planctonicus Korshikov, 1953

Hi Chris,
Please can you clarify which is the accepted name: Coenococcus planctonicus or Coenococcus planktonicus.
PESI and Algaebase quote the former, WORMS lists both and various reference books use a mixture, the latter often quoted for the type specimen.

Thank you

Christine

Re: Coenococcus planctonicus Korshikov, 1953

Hi Chris

Apologies but I wouldn't be able to rule on that (it's not my field of expertise), other than to say that if I had to choose a source for algae then I'd go for AlgaeBase. WoRMS bases its taxonomy on AlgaeBase anyway but might be slightly behind the original source.

Just reading AlgaeBase it seems confusing because both are accepted so could they both be valid names for 2 different organisms? They are phonetically the same but technically different names.

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Thanks Chris,
Outside my area of expertise too. I'll seek guidance from Algaebase.
cheers
