Topic: Marine Molluscs To Be Checked

Chris,

You may wish to follow up this posting on Facebook this morning (10/02/2016):

Currently on Seasearch ID Group there are messages about Velutina.   In the 1982 Conch Soc Atlas, ed. Dennis Seaward, there are the following numbers of live post-1950 sea area records: V. velutina 20, V. plicatilis 6, V. undata 1 (deep offshore water east of Shetland).   NBN has not a single record of any of them, and only V. velutina is a listed name.   There are undisputable photos of V. plicatilis by George Brown and Jason Gregory and various images of Velutina spawn on solitary ascidians posted on forums that haven't found their way onto NBN.    Can the situation be remedied?  Simon, Charlotte, Steve, Paula, I haven't posted a link to the Seasearch messages as only folk who are already a member of it would be able to view them as it is a closed group - join if you want to see:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/seasear … fications/

Sorry I haven't had time this morning to check the UKSI or the Gateway.

Cheers,

Steve

Re: Marine Molluscs To Be Checked

Hi Steve

Thanks for the heads-up ... I have 3 related taxa in the UKSI:

Velutina plicatilis (O. F. Müller, 1776)  (Species, mollusc)  MARINE
   =Velutina plicatilis (O F Müller, 1776)

Velutina velutina (O. F. Müller, 1776)  (Species, mollusc)  MARINE
   =Velutina laevigata (O. F. Müller, 1777)
   =Velutina laevigata (Müller O.F., 1776)
   =Velutina velutina (O F Müller, 1776)

Limneria undata (T. Brown, 1839)  (Species, mollusc)  MARINE
   =Velutina undata Smith J., 1839
=Velutina undata (Brown in Smith, 1839)

Could it just be that records haven't been sent in for some reason, or are hidden under a restrictive access licence?

Thanks
Chris R.

Re: Marine Molluscs To Be Checked

I don't think all the underlying records for the Seaward Atlas have been keyed into the Conchological Society database.  I believe that the Society is giving priority to entering new records and that there is still a substantial backlog of historical data not yet digitised.  In addition the Society can not pass data to the NBN unless  they do have  permission from the data owner to do so.  I am not sure what the current situations is, but certainly a few years back  there were a number of  recorders unwilling to allow their data onto the Gateway. I am sure a similar situation applies to data from a variety of sources, and it is probably being very optimistic to assume  that the all  data available in summary (published) form is  going  to be available on the Gateway.
