Topic: Metatrichia floriformis nom. inval.

Chris,

I am hoping you can help.  I found a slime mould today which I have tentatively ID'd as Metatrichia floriformis.   However, on attempting to enter the record into Richard Burkmar's "Gilbert-21" database, which uses the NBN Dictionary, this name is shown as "nom. inval." which I assume means "name  invalid".   I checked the name on the UKSI and sure enough it comes up with the same:  http://nbn-sd-dev.nhm.ac.uk/taxonbrowse … loriformis

In the UKSI display it does not present any further suggestions as to what name should be used for this species.   Am I correct in assuming I should not be recording under this name (as it is invalid) and if so what should I be doing ??  Obviously my understanding here is somewhat lacking.

Many thanks for any help you can provide.

Cheers.

Steve

Re: Metatrichia floriformis nom. inval.

Hi Steve

I'm not sure about that - both "Metatrichia floriformis" names currently point to the same taxon so it's fairly safe to record against them (the concept is not in confusion, only the name). But I don't know why the name is "inval" - that needs a fungus taxonomist. I also can't seem to reach IndexFungorum to check what the current situation it either. Sorry I can't come up with a solution but when IF comes back online then we'll have more information. :)

Best wishes,

Re: Metatrichia floriformis nom. inval.

On the British Mycological Society Facebook page, Malcolm Storey wrote: "UKSI is well out of date for fungi.   Best place for fungal taxonomy is Index Fungorum - that has two entries for the name in 1982 (invalid) and 1985 when the same author got it right! http://www.indexfungorum.org/Names/Name … dID=473878 and http://www.indexfungorum.org/Names/Name … dID=107414

The two pages show that one name is invalid and the other is valid BUT to my eyes both seem to be IDENTICAL.  So, potentially, there is quite a bit more change to be accommodated if UKSI is not up to date with the fungal taxonomy - again Chris - sorry.

Index Fungorum still seems to be down at this time.

Cheers.

Re: Metatrichia floriformis nom. inval.

Hi Steve

Yes, I'd agree with Malcolm - it'd be silly not to because he's one of our best mycologists and a good friend of mine ;)

The issue of bringing the UKSI taxonomy into line with the GBCHKLST and bringing that into line with Index Fungorum is in hand because BMS member Richard Shotbolt is working on a script to perform a 3-ways sync. I don't envy him the job because I think we've already got about 45000 fungus names and there are bound to be a lot more coming in but he seems to be on top of it and I have been updating him with versions of the UKSI data and support with the database logic etc - he is also working with Paul Kirk at the Index Fungorum end.

I think he is near to being able to do the first 'beta' test-run of the script so I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)   Not sure why IF is offline though but they might be doing server maintenance.

Cheers
