Topic: Cyprina islandica

Hello Chris.  I had reason to look up this beast today, and find that it is not recognised on the Gateway.

The preferred name (only one on the Gateway) is Arctica islandica (Linnaeus, 1767) [Icelandic Cyprine], NBNSYS0000173928.

The name I learned decades ago when I did molluscs was Cyprina islandica Linnaeus, 1767 as on

http://eol.org/pages/493164/names/synonyms and

http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php? … id=162712.

There is a disagreement between WORMS and ITIS on the brackets, I see.

That was the name in common use in Britain - Iceland Cockle in English - back in the '60s.

I would have thought the name Cyprina islandica should appear in the UKSI synonymy somewhere.  Anyway - I will leave it with you.

Re: Cyprina islandica

Hi Murdo

I try not to add synonyms if I can but you've made a good case for this one so it has been added :)   I have gone with the WoRMS bracketing because we have to plump for one or the other and WoRMS tends to be the database we follow closest :)

Cyprina islandica (Linnaeus, 1767)

Best wishes,
