Topic: Idioptera linnei and Limnophila fasciata are the same species

L. fasciata is a synonym of I. linnei but the species dictionary treats these two names as distinct species. I think the issue is that the old name L. fasciata (with its RDB status) used in the Recorder 3.3 dictionary is not linked as a synonym of I. linnei which is used in the DIPTERA checklist (without any national status). Can the synonymy and the national status be resolved please?

Re: Idioptera linnei and Limnophila fasciata are the same species

Hi Steve

Many thanks for spotting that - it looks like one we missed when we went through the Tipulidae recently :)  I can synonymise fasciata easily enough but national statuses are a little problematic because they are based on statute checklists and these are written in stone ... and often use names that are long (LONG!) out of date. For this reason you have to pass any query that includes a taxon designation through the Nameserver so that you can 'collect' designations that might be attached to ancient synonyms. It's a pain but taxonomy moves much faster than the legal system ;)

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Once nameserver is adjusted this should automatically sort out the designations.
