Topic: NBN Taxon Version Keys query

Good afternoon,

I am creating a Grasshopper and Cricket Recording Scheme in Northern Ireland. I have discovered seven species of grasshopper which do not have Taxon Version Keys on the NBN Gateway. Is it possible to get an update on the following species:

Chopardina importata
Jamaicana flava
Nesonotus tricornis
Phlugiolopsis henryi
Gryllodes supplicans
Pseudomogoplistes vicentae
Calliptamus italicus

Thanks,
Catherine

Re: NBN Taxon Version Keys query

Hello Catherine

One of these currently has a taxonversionkey (Pseudomogoplistes vicentae: NHMSYS0020973988) in the UK Species Inventory (UKSI). I have alerted Chris Raper, manager of the UKSI, to you forum post as I can't see the other 6 in the Species Inventory

Best wishes

Re: NBN Taxon Version Keys query

Hi Catherine

Do you have records pending for these names? I only ask because they mainly appear to be rare vagrants/non-native species. I am happy to add them if records need to go in but I wouldn't want to add names on the off-chance that they are spotted :)

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Re: NBN Taxon Version Keys query

Chris,

I too went through these species names in this request a couple of days ago and found them 'unusual'.  I couldn't find any extant records for the UK - perhaps I didn't look hard enough.  I was curious as to how you would deal with the request.  Must admit I find your answer tactful, helpful and reassuring.

Cheers.

Re: NBN Taxon Version Keys query

Hi all,

Firstly I'd like to thank you all for taking the time to respond to my query.

Graham, thank you for providing this NBN Taxon Version Key, most appreciated.

Chris, no I do not have any records of these species. I was provided with this species list from the UK Orthoptera Recording Scheme co-ordinator. I would propose to leave these now six species out of the recording scheme species list for now, and should a recorder discover an 'unusual' species, we can investigate this further at that time. I also agree with Steve that I am happy you take the approach you do re: adding species to the NBN, as we don't want to add in an element of undue risk/danger of mis-identification.

Steve, thank you for your comment also. I completely agree with your attitude to Chris's management of the site.

Thanks again,
Catherine

Re: NBN Taxon Version Keys query

Good luck with creating the Orthoptera recording scheme in Northern Ireland Catherine - here is hoping it is a huge success - not sure whether I have any records for NI but I will check.

Cheers and take care.

Re: NBN Taxon Version Keys query

Hi Catherine

That sounds the best course of action - I have asked Bjorn in the UK Orthoptera recording scheme for his advice too. If you do get any records then just let me know and I can usually add things in pretty quickly here and then it's just a matter of letting the updates filter down to the NBN Gateway, Recorder & iRecord. :)

Best wishes,
Chris R.
