Topic: Birch gall synonymy

Hello Chris.  These two flies should be synonyms, I think:

Plemeliella betulicola (Kieffer, 1889), NBNSYS0000028007

and

Resseliella betulicola (Kieffer, 1889), NHMSYS0020470509

EOL does not have the former, though it is used by the 2002 Redfern & Shirley, and there is a post by Keith Harris in the galls forum thus:

>>>
These folded leaves on Betula and the larva shown in your images indicate that this is Plemeliella  betulicola (Kieffer 1889). For some reason that species is placed in Resseliella in the World Cecidomyiidae Catalog (Gagne & Jaschhof, 2014).

Re: Birch gall synonymy

That thread I quoted from above has been quite active today - worth looking at it: https://uk.groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ … pics/1822.

There seems to be doubt whether Resseliella is appropriate as the genus.

Re: Birch gall synonymy

Thanks Murdo - I'm happy to put Resseliella as the junior synonym for now if the UK recorders prefer the taxonomy of Plemeliella being the accepted name. :)
