Topic: Lesser Soft-Brome

Bromus hordeaceus L. [Spp] on the VASCULAR plants list has a common name of Lesser Soft-Brome - we believe this should be just Soft-Brome? (If it helps, it's just Soft-Brome on the gateway)

The hybrid Bromus hordeaceus x lepidus = B. x pseudothominei P.M. Sm. [SppHyb] also has the common name Lesser Soft-Brome which I think is correct.

Re: Lesser Soft-Brome

Hi Charlie

Certainly the Lesser name has been marked as ill-formed and in the master taxonomy it is listed as just Soft-Brome. I won't be able to modify the BSBI Vascular plants list without evidence that it is a mistake or an instruction from the contributor. The BSBI are in the process of making a new plants list so it is likely to be superseded fairly soon anyway. Is it causing a specific problem?

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Re: Lesser Soft-Brome

Might be one for Mike if it's marked as ill-formed - Recorder shouldn't be using that as a recommended common name ... I think !?

Re: Lesser Soft-Brome

Ahh, that's possibly true - I never can remember how Mike calculates the recommended common name in R6 but if there is anything I can do to help then I will. Certainly the Nameserver seems to be set correctly to indicate that Soft-brome is the best available common name. :)

Re: Lesser Soft-Brome

There is no common name on the vascular plants list for this species, so the name is coming from the R3.3 list which has Soft-Brome and lesser soft brome as common names. R6 hasn't been looking at the ill formed indicator when making a choice in these situations, but I will look at modifying it to do so for the next update.
