Topic: R6/Preferred Checklist (Duff 2012)

When can we have the Preferred Coleoptera checklist brought up to date and into line with Duff 2012? I'm working on an atlas and it's becoming evident that quite a few changes were made in the 2012 list which haven't made Recorder yet.

Re: R6/Preferred Checklist (Duff 2012)

Hi

The Coleoptera checklist is high on my list of things to update but I can't provide a specific timescale yet - I hope in the coming months. I have been working through the lichens recently and this took a long time to complete and I'm now bringing the BTO bird list up to date too, which I should complete before Christmas. There is a large update pending for marine organisms but if I can fit Duff's 2012 list in before that I will do.

In the meantime if there are any specific changes/additions I can make to get over a particular problem with recording then do let me know. :)

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Chris, in reply to your comment "In the meantime if there are any specific changes/additions I can make to get over a particular problem with recording then do let me know." please would you sort out the Suphrodytes dorsalis problem mentioned by several posters recently (and by me nearly 2 years ago)

Re: R6/Preferred Checklist (Duff 2012)

Hi Rachel,

The Suphrodytes dorsalis changes should have been done earlier this year, though I know Charlie Barnes has commented that the resulting arrangement might appear a little confusing. I remember that the problems were quite tricky to balance - between getting the taxonomy correct and yet retaining the meaning in existing records - and so I discussed all the options with Andrew Duff and we decided on the arrangement that we have now.

If you spot any problems with the newest version of the database then perhaps create a new thread and we can work through them with people like Charlie and see what the best solution is. :)

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Re: R6/Preferred Checklist (Duff 2012)

On the subject of Suphrodytes and Chaetarthria, I notice that a 'Browse species' search on the Gateway for Suphrodytes brings up only Suphrodytes dorsalis s. lat. - no mention of S. dorsalis s. str. or S. figuratus.  A search for Chaetarthria brings up three species as one would wish, but there are no records shown for C. simillima nor for C. seminulum s. str. (which is listed under the synonym C. coccinelloides.

That's an odd one Bob - I wonder whether Graham has an old taxonomy database there because my own version brings up all of the taxa. I will chase that up for you.

Thanks, Chris. By the way, regarding my comment "A search for Chaetarthria brings up three species as one would wish" I should have said two species and an aggregate of course.

The problem persists.  Any news?
