Topic: Gateway species search problem

I have just been doing some sawfly analysis and found the following problem

Enter 'Cladius pallipes' in the search and it returns only Cladius (Priophorus) compressicornis which has 'C.pallipes' as a synonym, but only one record on the Lancs coast. There is however 'Cladius (Priophorus) pallipes' which is not returned unless the sub-genus is included! This is 'relatively' common.

Don't know if this will be corrected in the current Gateway rebuild, but a good time to check!

Intrigingly, in Recorder, on the 'official' preferred list 'C.pallipes' is given as a synonym of Cladius (Priophorus) compressicornis and Cladius (Priophorus) pallipes is only on the 'List of Additional Names' with a synonym of Priophorus pallipes

On the 'Hymenoptera Name Server' (for which I do not know how comprehensive it is), Cladius compressicornis doesn't appear to exist and C.pallipes is given as a good species name

Re: Gateway species search problem

Hi Craig

That does seem to be an issue, as you say. On PESI compressicornis doesn't exist but pallipes does. I will run this by Gavin Broad and see what he has to say on the matter :)

Best wishes,

Re: Gateway species search problem

According to Gavin the correct name is compressicornis with pallipes as the synonym so I will do the necessary changes down here. Gavin also tells me that he is close to being able to publish a new UK Hymenoptera checklist so we will be working together to convert his existing Word format into data that we can import into the UKSI. :)

Re: Gateway species search problem

Hi Craig

Searches using the new version of the NBN Gateway, due to be released end of next week, will not need to include the subgenus, ie Cladius pallipes returns both names with and without the subgenus. They currently point to different preferred names as you point out.

Best wishes
