Topic: Taxa with subgenus duplication

Chris,

I am finding a number of entries where there is both "Genus (Subgenus) species" and "Genus species", both as preferred taxon

e.g.
NHMSYS0020470264 Cyanapion gyllenhalii
NHMSYS0020151953 Cyanapion (Bothryorrhynchapion) gyllenhalii

both are preferred and appear on the NBN Gateway, although there is no map associated with the non-subgenus version

There are a number of other examples, particularly in the mollusca e.g. all the following are listed as preferred:
NHMSYS0020528111 Arion (Kobeltia) hortensis
NHMSYS0001701912 Arion hortensis (this has a common name of Arion (Kobeltia) distinctus!)
NBNSYS0100001650 Arion hortensis agg.
NHMSYS0000377646 Arion hortensis seg.

To say the least, this is confusing!

Re: Taxa with subgenus duplication

Hi Craig

Many thanks for spotting the first one - I have fixed that now. The Arion hortensis situation is quite confusing but I think at least the first 3 are taxonomically distinct entities:

NHMSYS0020528111 Arion (Kobeltia) hortensis A. Ferussac, 1819 [the main species]
NHMSYS0001701912 Arion hortensis  auct. non Ferussac, 1819  [of authors, not Ferussac]
NBNSYS0100001650 Arion hortensis agg.  [a recording aggregate]

The 4th:
NHMSYS0000377646 Arion hortensis seg. Ferussac, 1819 [of Ferussac]

is synonymous with the first, in my opinion (after taking advice from John Tweddle) and so I have synonymised that one. "of Ferussac, 1819" should mean the same as an author of "Ferussac, 1819".

Many thanks

Re: Taxa with subgenus duplication

Chris

There are many more where the binomial and the subgenus entries are both given as preferred, I have sent you a spreadsheet with them listed
