Did you use the default folders on installation ?  http://www.recorder6.info/page11.html contains details of what we have found so far with Windows 8.  If  file location is the problem you do not need to reinstall, but you can move the files to a new folder and alter the regsistry to point to the new location. All the files written to by users (Rucksacks, Recording Cards Maps, Report Output) will be affected by this.

The settings you need are in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Dorset Software/Recorder 6/Settings.  Create a folder which you have read write permission on and use this for all the folders/files which are likely to cause problems. You to need to move the whole of the User File folder, the Base map folder, the Map Files folder, the object Sheet folder, and the Error Path folder. Registry entries for Base Map path, Error Path, Import Template Path, Local Image File Path, Map File Path, Object Sheet File path, Recording Card path, Report path, Report Template path, Rucksack path and snapshgot path need to be repointed.

I have just worked out this list for you, and believe it to complete, but if anything fails to work after making the change then additional changes may be required.
