Topic: Nabis problem?

Our Heteropterist is grateful for you dealing with the Saldula problem, Chris, and then he came back with another.

We have a number of records of Nabis lineatus Nabis (Limnonabis) lineatus Dahlbom, 1851     TaxonVersionKey: NHMSYS0020309499 which were imported from R3.3.

I can't tell how they were entered originally, but they should all have referred to what is now Nabis (Dolichonabis) limbatus Dahlbom, 1851     TaxonVersionKey: NHMSYS0020309497.

N. lineatus has a number of invalid synonyms listed, including

Nabicula limbata (Dahlbom)     TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0000010068
Nabicula limbatus       TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0000152110.

I am not sure what is going on here, but I suspect a synonymy problem between R3.3/RA57/P-EM and the current dictionary is wrongly mapping the species.

I have added comments on the Gateway (all 152 of them, and that is another story), but when you get a moment maybe you could check that all is well in that department.

I am hoping that if there is an error it will be corrected when we next get a dictionary update, otherwise I have 152 records to reallocate manually.

Re: Nabis problem?

Having just done a bit of table-hopping I can say the TLIKs for the 'lineatus' relate to Nabicula limbata (Dahlbom)     TaxonVersionKey: NBNSYS0000010068 from R3.3.

Re: Nabis problem?

Blimey, this is a complicated one ...

R3.3 lists:

Nabicula lineata (Dalhbom)
with a synonym of =Nabicula lineatus

AND

Nabicula limbata (Dahlbom)
with a synonym =Nabicula limbatus

Currently we have:

Nabis (Limnonabis) lineatus Dahlbom, 1851      (a valid species: see here)
with 2 synonyms =Nabicula limbata and =Nabicula limbatus

AND

Nabis (Dolichonabis) limbatus Dahlbom, 1851    (a valid species: see here)
with a synonym =Nabis limbatus

So does that mean that the synonyms =Nabicula limbata and =Nabicula limbatus were incorrectly applied to "Nabis (Limnonabis) lineatus Dahlbom, 1851" and caused records to be assigned to the wrong species when they were taken over from R3.3 to the Gateway?

(scratches head ... needs more tea)

Re: Nabis problem?

This is the scenario I suspected, Chris, but as it is not my group I can't offer an opinion.

If this is the answer, will the dets in R6 be corrected when the dictionary is eventually corrected and updated, or will I need to revise the dets myself?

Re: Nabis problem?

OK, I think I have got this one sorted, with the help of Bernard Nau.

Nabis (Limnonabis) lineatus Dahlbom, 1851 shouldn't have had the synonyms "Nabicula limbata" and "Nabicula limbatus" so I have moved those to "Nabis (Dolichonabis) limbatus". This fixes any issues in the current database but I think we'd need Graham French to tell us whether it will fix the problems you had in the NBN Gateway, with your records :)

Re: Nabis problem?

Just to finish this one off, I can confirm that with your changes the names were corrected automatically.
