Re: Chub ... Leuciscus cephalus

Hi,

The preferred name for Chub Leuciscus cephalus (TLIK: NHMSYS0000544441) on the preferred list FISH Checklist of British freshwater fishes appears to be pointing to Squalius cephalus (TLIK: NHMSYS0020769992) on the list JNCC collation of taxon designations, even though this taxon entry is not the preferred name.

Is this correct or has something gone wrong with our species dictionary?

Thanks,
Andy

Re: Chub ... Leuciscus cephalus

Hi Andy,

I have just checked the database and our preferred name is indeed "Squalius cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758)", not
"Leuciscus cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758)". For fish we follow international guidelines on sites such as FishBase and PESI, which also prefer the use of "Squalius cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758)".

Best wishes,
Chris R.

Re: Chub ... Leuciscus cephalus

This might explain why no common name is being pulled for Squalius cephalus in a report in Recorder ... ?

Re: Chub ... Leuciscus cephalus

"Chub" is certainly the vernacular name that is linked to "Squalius cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758)" in our NameServer here, so it should be OK. But I am not sure how the Recorder report itself actually manipulates the data for reporting purposes so perhaps take that one up with the Recorder team first and if our data does need investigating then I'd be happy to look deeper :)

Dang, oh well  :), hoping for an obvious fix! More investigation needed then.

I'll leave you to find my other posts which I think _are_ in your ball park...
