Re: Another missing synonym
Cernuella (Cernuella) virgata (Da Costa, 1778) TaxonVersionKey: NHMSYS0001701953 seems to have a valid and widely used synonym in Helicella virgata. The Gateway does not recognise the latter at all.

Hi Murdo - I have had a look into this and (to my uneducated eye) they seem to be different species - can you confirm whether this is the case or not? I am basing my evidence on WoRMS, which is a good online catalogue, and they have them listed in different families - see here:

Not my taxon, but if you Google helicella AND cernuella you come up with a lot of references to the latter as a subgenus of the former, or a genus on its own, and with species virgata. Some returned are not authoritative, but this one looks to be: http://mczbase.mcz.harvard.edu/name/Helicella%20(Cernuella)%20virgata. I can't help beyond that. WORMS looks certain about its position, but others clearly disagree.

Hmm, I think the one you pointed to is just a list of determinations of things in their museum ... I'd not read too much into it really. I will have a think on it though and see if I can dig anything up - if you can find anything definitive too then it would help :)
True, but the taxonomy they use has C. as a subgenus of H. You would expect Harvard to get it right. Maybe ask the Conchologist's Society www.conchsoc.org for a quick opinion?

I have just checked my copy of Kerney & Cameron (Collins guide, 1979) and they give Cernuella virgata as the primary name, with Helicella virgata, H. maritima and H. variabilis as synonyms.

OK, if it is in as popular a publication as K&C then I will add it :)
